i am sorry, but i would like to add this about china and the olympics.

it seems these days nobody is going to be pleased about where the olympics are held. The sad fact about society is you can't please everbody. No matter what country they are held in, there are human rights abuses. I think only one country has the right to say there are no abuses but i don't think we'd like the olympics to be held there. I think giving the olympics to china is giving china a chance to be better, and we need to support and stand for that. We spend too much ime allowing the media to paint a poor picture, and we endorse the media for it. It's too bad that we have become a media driven society that needs instant news. instant news tends to sensationalize because it has to get the ratings. Stories become bigger then they are because nobody cares if they are not front page.

Nobody is going to be pleased because everyone competes to have the olympics in their own country. It's worth a lot of money. I don't give a damn if it was held in the USA, and we protests all over the place. I only give a damn when people try to bother the games as a way of protesting. People should have left the torcher bearers alone. They should have had some runners carrying banners and signs running with the torch, that would have been better. Giving China the olympics is like rewarding a child for bad behavior. China hasn't done anything to foster a better society there or abroad. It's not some global conspiracy to paint China as bad, it's just the cold truth of the situation. You're just angry Chinese person in a America because nobody is excited about the olympics in your home country.

huh??? and you are a misguided yellow head with a blue hat that says tech for saying that.

i guess it's all perspective. to the US, china is bad, to a lot of other countries, the US is no better.
i have a lot of friends from china, but they live in the US. They still love and visit china, but left hong kong to come here.
I have armenian, french, german, english, indian and pakistani friends too that came to the US and live here, but still like where they came from, although they will be glad to tell you of the injustices there.

i tend to think the true spirit of competition in the olympics is being lost in the politics of the location.

hey, yeah. lets have them someplace here, like how about atlanta. where it's not overcrowded, polluted, trashy, and wait.. we did that and the only thing atlanta had on china was we had some dude who attacks abortion clinics blow up a trash can.
it's only controversy because the media has nothing else to harp on, bush is dead duck, oil prices dropping, etc etc.. the media needs something to focus on that they can sensationalize...

surely you're joking?

now that I think about it...

for all those talking about the IOC and corruption, especially in the decision to grant the Olympics to China, I would like to submit this issue for further review when the Olympics are granted to Chicago.

So let's deal with this corruption issue again in 8 years, shall we? 😉

it seems daily we hear something bad about china and the Olympics. perhaps in the future they won't give it to a country such as china.

the Olympics this year is a joke. with the smog, censorship and other BS

i have to agree. what a "great" country to play host.

A: he's not competing

B: He's going to bitch about the current "world problem" and thats it. The olympics is not a place to push your agenda. Have the dude call a press conference or something if he feels that strongly about Darfur or save the whales, or feed the ethiopians or whatever the current cool charity/bad thing going on in the world its cool to rally against.

To quote the first reply to the news story, which I happen to agree with fully,

"I don't think the ancient Greeks envisioned the Olympics to include politics, activism, etc, just pure athletics."

Actually it was an event steeped in religious ceremonies which are inherently political. In fact, the ancient olympics were eventually banned by, of course, the Christian Roman Emperor, as it was considered a pagan celebration.

Was the US revoking VISA's of people that disagreed with their policies?

haha the idiot is comparing atlanta's pollution to beijing. Did you see anyone wearing masks while running in Atlanta? Were we beating up journalists?

wait until someone waves a Free Tibet/Taiwan/Darfur or any other country and gets caught by the "police"

yeah if/when it happens its going to make for a entertaining news..

You would say that.

yeah,by theodosius i think.. anyway,

During the ancient times ... the festival was meant to be, in part, a celebration of the achievements of the human body. Upon winning the games, the victor would have not only the prestige of being in first place but would also be presented with a crown of olive leaves. The olive branch is a sign of hope and peace.[12]

The olympics are supposed to be physical contests of skill and athleticism, not a sounding board for people to push their beliefs or world issues.

I see...and you think China wanted to host the Olympics out of the goodness of its heart and not to demonstrate its political and economic prowess? Like Germany hosted in 1936 because it needed the tourism dollars? It's inherently political, sorry.

China. The world's finest example of a social, economical, governmental, and human rights plumb line since 1200 BC

I wonder what would happen if the Olympics were held this year in the good old USA?

Would we have protesters with signs that say:

"Free Iraq. Stop the Illegal Occupation"
"Stop the illegal war in Afghanistan"
"Haiwaiian Independence -- NOW. Stop the cultural genocide of Haiwaiin native people"
"Free the political prisoners from Gitmo!"
"USA -- Stop supporting oppressive regimes like Israel by selling them weapons!"
"USA -- Stop supporting oppressive regimes like Saudi Arabia by buying oil. Stop doing business with them!"
"USA denies Visas and prevents Muslim Cat Stevens from going to the Olympics"
"Human Rights Groups claim that USA is one of the worst because it has the highest prisoner population of all nations!"

I think his point was more about the US not being w/o sin in regards to human rights violations and shady activities. Ironically, I feel that because theres no significant censorship of the press, the tiny amount that goes on goes on unnoticed and whats published jsut becomes white noise and most of the public just ignores it all.

And that's why I'm glad to be a citizen here. 😉 But my point is that no country is perfect and that it seems a little hypocritical to constantly bash China on things that almost every country has done or is still doing. China still has many problems but they are improving -- there's a huge difference between China now and what it was like 30 years ago. They are heading in the right direction -- I don't see the point in demonizing them just because they haven't improved everything all at once.

I'm sure China would love to soak in the economic windfall that is the olympic games as well as showcase their cities and country in general to the world. Furthermore, the olympic committee picked them to host the games so we should respect their decision to do so and their honor in doing so.

I'm no defender of China. I don't like how they treat their citizens or the world in general, but the olympic games should not be used as a sounding board for world issues. Doing so is just cheapening the experience and the spirit of the games.

err, those protests are happening without the Olympics being in the states.

Well, we could censure all the media, internet and outside news like certain countries do, so that our people are blind and stupid as to what lies outside of our borders. We could create a kind of blind nationalism of people that don't know any better since they have only been spoonfed what our government wanted them to hear/believe. We could lock up dissenters and anyone that chose to be critical of our government. We could flood our countrysides water supply and land with toxins and chemicals from state run plants so that entire villages our filled with carcinogens...

Yeah, they have definitely come a long way...

I don't think anyone complained much when they had the World Cup in Seoul, and it was right next door to China.
