Wow, China is doing what we did 45 years ago. Communism ROCKS!!

we may be behind, but we surely are catching up, China is an emerging world power.

people have been saying that exact same thing for two centuries now

the Economist noted that it will likely be the world's largest economy before 2020

Why stay in America? Since you claim to be chinese rather than american?

so i can steal american intelligence of course

You wont find much of that in these forums

What worries my is that they shrouded the launch plans in secrecy. Why did they have to be so secretive?

In case they screw up, they'd show some pre-edited tape on National TV about how the rocket is being moved back to the hangar for a postponed launch... Or whatever. Never underestimate the power of propaganda.

Someone clue the CIA in on this post and see how much ol max is laughing afterward.

State television cut into its programming to announce the launch, though no footage was shown.

How do we know it didn't prompty smash directly into The Great Wall?

EDIT: I suck at teh internet.

assuming their numbers aren't flat out lying.

and that doesn't really mean "catching up," since most of what china makes isn't anywhere near the bleeding edge

I'd save the celebrations until the successful return of the cosmonaut...

I don't want to see headlines from China like: "Successfull launch! Cosmonaut in orbit, telemtry readings just fine, blah-blah-blah. And in the end: body shows no vital signs".

I'm more worried about the "And in the end: Los Angeles annihilated by chinese space rocket".

Any failures or problems can be covered up more easily if they happen.

i think china is doing pretty well considering what it has gone through in the last 100 years or so. i hope this goes smoothly 🙂 definitely a big step for china.

you guys can make fun of China all you want, but just for your information, it was the Chinese that invented the compass, gun powder, and paper.

Congrats to them.

Everyone says that China is going to take over the world. 🙂 Just like how everyone in the 80s said that Japan would take over 🙂

But there's no doubt that they're rising up. Same with India. It will be interesting with both of these countries right next to each other.

Not that it helped much in world domination
In fact, quite the opposite for quite a while...

I don't think that anyone is genuinely making fun of them.

And you can come up with inventions from almost every society from almost any time.

What have they done in the last thousand years?

not a big fan of time zones, are you?

Here's a CNN article for you as of 5 min ago:
http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/space/10/14/china.countdown/index.html[/q

that article was posted at 7:33. Launch was about an hour ago, or about 20 minutes after the original post.

And?

Here's the logic for you:
someone: China launched a rocket
me: all right. www.cnn.com -> link to full article -> "final preparations"
me: as far as I can tell, they haven't launched yet
you: you suck at time zones
me: wth?

And it took the West to show them how to properly use it. If it weren't for Western intervention China would still just be running around chasing paper dragons through the street and firing off bottle rockets.

Not that I have anything against the Chinese people....good folks....wife's best friend married a Chinese national while she was there teaching English. Cool guy...... Anyway....all the Chinese I have ever met have been really down to Earth normal people...it's just that their govt sucks.

Comrade Jintao would be proud

Somehow, instead of this being a "Good going China" thread, it turned into "so what?" and "China hasn't contributed anything to the world" thread.
