you guys can make fun of China all you want, but just for your information, it was the Chinese that invented the compass, gun powder, and paper.

What have they done in the last thousand years?

They have been technological superior for 2000 years.

Maybe you aren't so bright with history.

During Ming dynasty China has a navy fleet of 600+ war ships, more than the world combined at the time, they could have taken over the world. But Europe was so backward that China didn't even bother looking at them. Even today America's navy fleet is only around 300.

LOL you are hilarious. WTF are you talking about??

yes, i have, but for that to happen china would have to invest some serious R&D, which they haven't been doing. no, they're mostly manufacturing.

Very true, but as their economy grows, more money becomes available for research. Look at the number of engineers being trained right now. If they keep their focus, they will pass countries whos citizens are more worried about getting a bigger SUV.

again...people of USA showing their ignorance...just cause we like it doesnt mean that we should force it upon other people...just cause we like to watch tv and eat fast food every night doesnt mean that its the BEST thing to do for human kind...instead of working 8 hours a day in an office then hating your life...maybe other people like to farm land and be close to mother earth and be happy that way...just cause we have the bombs dont mean we are better...

Europeans don't like nationalism? Hell....they invented it.

Well, no, it goes back further. I think that with some notible exceptions, Europe is wary of nationalism. It has led to countless wars on the continent. The memory of WWII lingers though.
That should read...

"The French are afraid of German nationalism"

Otherwise they tend to be pretty damn nationalistic. More so than they like to admit.....

yeah what the hell is this revisionist tripe? heck, it's not even revisionist, its outright lying!

learning won't leapfrog. it might catch up, but without actually doing R&D yourself you're not going to get ahead on the curve.

Not that it helped much in world domination
In fact, quite the opposite for quite a while...

Yes because China never intended to dominate the world. If the Confucian way of thinking had not taken hold so strongly, the court administrators would have never been able to defeat the eunuchs allowing Zheng He and the Treasure Fleet to continue sailing and exploring. Sooner or later, the Chinese would have smarten up and would have used it as a trade advantage rather than giving out their own treasure for the lower valued tributes given by the people the Chinese visited. From there the Chinese would have beaten the Europeans in exploring the world. Hell we could be typing this in Chinese right now rather than English. The Chinese chose not to pursue world conquest, not because they couldn't. Since China dismantled their own Treasure Fleet and passed laws that forbade the construction of large ships there has been no navy in the world that has been able to match the size of it. The Chinese were capable, but they were inwardly focused as opposed to the Europeans who always looked to the seas.

China has made some extremely bad decisions in the past. And though I'm glad the Chinese have finally decided to join the space race, that money could have definitely been used elsewhere. Pitiful government... I hope the next generation speeds up the changes.

Somehow, instead of this being a "Good going China" thread, it turned into "so what?" and "China hasn't contributed anything to the world" thread.

Many Americans do that.

"I live in America. Your country sucks".

Not everyone is like that, but more than enough.

That's actually true of any nationality. I have yet to see a country where people do not take pride of living in it.

A lot of Europeans don't seem to. They seem to not like nationalism. But people from the US, China, India, etc. do.

I was actually thinking of the French in terms of nationalism. I didnt want to get off onto a French bashing thing. All contries have a sense of nationalistic pride. Nationalism in a militaristic sense, where one country thinks itself so superior that they ought to go to war and liberate/invade/rape/pillage is something they are afraid of.

maybe, but, like i said before, that is assuming the gov't isn't outright lying about their production numbers. and if they're not the focus of the educated workers will soon become revolution, one would think.

Just like the Japanese catch up and passthe Americans and the Korean getting ready to outleap the Japanese, I think its quite feasible for the Chinese to outleap the Americans. Heck, if you look at most US university, they have significant number of foreign chinese students in the graduate student section. China just need to find a good incentive to bring these talents back home instead of just staying and earning a good living in the US, which at this point I don't think they have yet find a way to do that.
Just remember, this is a country with about 5x the population of the US. It wont be hard to conceede that they have at least as much talent than those of this country.

I believe you right to be skeptical of their numbers, but it seems reasonable to believe their economy is growing rapidly. I do think that communism is soon (matter of years) to go. Hopefully it will be a peaceful transition

The Japanese passed the Americans? When was this? In the 80s they were very competitive and everyone thought they would surpass the US, but look where they are now.

To say that the US isn't the technological leader in the world is being ignorant. Seriously, only an idiot or a liberal arts major would say such a thing. The US is currently the leading innovator. To deny it is just as dumb as denying that China was once the leading innovator in a long ago era, Europe with the Renaissance, the Romans, etc.

Yes, there are a significant foreign students in engineering graduate schools. Especially Chinese and Indians. But guess what? For the most part they're Americans 😀

Outstanding! I hope everything goes well for the pilot and for the mission as a whole. Regardless of nationality, humanity needs a bigger presence in space, so I'm happy to see this.

Dont let China fool you. They are more ahead in technology than you think. Just cause you dont see it does not mean it is not there.

How do you know that China does not have a nuclear weapons pointed at us right now? They could be just waiting for the right time to press the red button.

nice sarcasm. i guess all of europe+canada really suck a lot. seeing as they probably wont make it for another 45 years.

and btw. to whoever said they think india will surpass the chinese. wtf are you smoking? it must be good, cuz india cannot even come close to touching china the way things are looking right now.

quote from CNN:

"In a sense, the Chinese began the space race.

The Chinese invented rockets in the 13th century, and used the so called "fire arrows" to fend off invading Mongols.

According to Chinese legend, the first person to attempt a trip into space was a 16th century man named Wan Hoo.

Wan, desiring to reach the moon, supposedly strapped 47 rockets to a wicker chair and had 47 assistants light the fuses.

Not a trace of him was found. "
