Chicago school to run a gunman type drill, which will include firing blanks

A school shooting drill planned for tomorrow in the far northwestern suburbs has many parents upset.
According to a letter from Cary-Grove High School principal Jay Sargeant, there will be a code red drill at the school on Wednesday.

It will include somebody shooting blanks from a gun in the hallway “in an effort to provide our teachers and students some familiarity with the sound of gunfire.”

IMO this is grossly idiotic. There are more than 120,000 schools in the country. The chances of any kid being killed in one are minute. Moreover, in practice there's damn little you can do to train a kid that they aren't going to naturally do anyway (hide or run).

Kids' imaginations are powerful. This is absolutely guaranteed to scare some of them needlessly to zero benefit except misguided nonsense from the principal and/or school board.

Seriously, what can they do? Lock/barricade the doors, stay away from the windows, and pray. That's about it. I guess it couldn't hurt to practice such things but you'd think a lot of this would be common sense.

Weird, but from the news of all the gun deaths in Chicago, I'd assume that hearing gun shots there was as familiar as hearing gun shots where I live out in the country.

Wow, you are right! (totally missed this!) Cary is not even remotely close to Chicago. I will now change my opinion from this is idiots in Chicago to idiots in Cary.
