Just come, Chicago isn't scary
I know Chicago isn't scary. I'll be there all this weekend. I just don't know where I am going and I really hate not knowing where I'm going. Plus I get freaked out in traffic. Maybe next time. I just drove up there for the 1st time (with company, not alone) and I did okay so maybe I'll get better, or maybe I can talk him into it.
The lake is East. Almost all streets run N-S or E-W. addresses increase as you go north (North Side) and as you go west. The increase as you go south on the south side. The N/S "0" address is at Monroe or Madison? Downtown.
That's about all you need to know to find your way through Chicago.
As for Glenview...I don't know. Never been.
State and Madison. Madison runs east-west, and therefore is 0 N. State runs north-south, so it's 0 W. Actually, I think one of them is 1 instead of 0, but close enough.
Off the top of my head:
800 N: Chicago Ave.
1200 N: Division Ave.
1600 N: North Ave.
2000 N: Armitage Ave.
2400 N: Fullerton Ave.
2800 N: Diversey Pkwy.
3200 N: Belmont Ave.
3600 N: Addison Ave. (Wrigley Field is on this street)
4000 N: Irving Park Ave.
4400 N: Montrose Ave.
4800 N: Lawrence Ave.
5200 N: Foster Ave.
5600 N: Bryn Mawr Ave.
6000 N: Peterson Ave.
6400 N: Devon Ave.
6800 N: ????
7200 N: Touhy Ave.
Every "400" or four streets is a half mile. Sorry, not too familiar with South Side streets, but most of those (that run east-west) are numbered anyway. For example US Cellular Field (formerly Comiskey Park) is on 35th Street.
Now, N/S streets off the top of my head:
800 W: Halsted Ave.
1200 W: Racine Ave.
1600 W: Ashland Ave.
2000 W: Damen Ave. (The United Center is on this street)
2400 W: Western Ave.
2800 W: California Ave.
3200 W: Kedzie Ave.
3600 W: Central Park Ave.
4000 W: Pulaski Ave.
4400 W: Kostner Ave.
4800 W: Cicero Ave. (Midway Airport is on this street)
5200 W: Laramie Ave.
5600 W: Central Ave.
6000 W: Austin Ave.
6400 W: Ridgeland/Narragansett Ave.
6800 W: Oak Park Ave.
7200 W: Harlem Ave.
Again, 400 or 4 is a half mile. The whole point is that the grid system makes locations easy to find - if I told you to come to my apartment at 3845 W Cullom Ave, you'd know I'm between Central Park and Pulaski. As for how far North/South I'd have to give you more information. I'm between Irving Park and Montrose.
There are a few streets that run diagonally, probably to supplement some of the expressways. On the North side you have Grand (which runs straight for a bit then slants NW), Elston (which I live right off of), Milwaukee, Lincoln, Clark, Clybourn, Higgins, Talcott, Northwest Highway (it's a street), Caldwell, and a few others for short stretches. I could ramble on but it's time for lunch!
