If this GPU chip is a R9 380X and there is a flagship R9 390X chip above then its amazing. Otherwise its quite bad as Nvidia will bring the GM200 to crush this card. 😀
 
Nice to see more rumors come out as that is always fun!

There is of course no way that is real though... pushing 20% improvements over the 980 in both performance and absolute power draw? Only in magical Christmas land.

Edit: heh, power draw was improved over 290 not 980.. my bad. That is a lot more in the realm of realistic.

First concern is if this is true. Second concern if this is a fully activated chip. 380X could easily be a significantly cut down large die. 390X fully enabled, 390 little disabled (like 7950/290). 280X significantly cut down.
 
The same place had GK110 and Hawaii reviews. I don't remember how close to reality they were though. I doubt it will be able to find the graphs again.

The second tier down is usually its own configuration/chip.

78x0 was Pitcairn, 79x0 was Tahiti
280* was Tahiti, 290* was Hawaii

Anyway, this seems to correspond with the rumors that the 380* GPUs would be handily in range of the 980.

You are correct. Though 20 nm planar LP may give more troubles than before, especially with a larger chip.
 
Going by the power consumption I hope its not top tier GPU.
I hope amd sticks with 250W TDP flagships and not this 150W TDP temporary-flagship BS nv is doing...

True, but even if this is a 390X, look at the power usage of only ~ 200W. That means AMD has room for a more powerful 250-275W card to respond to GM200. I can see them doing that because you still need to have a refresh in the wings for the next 12 months (March-May 2016) until next generation of cards in early 2017. I can't see AMD's flagship card using "only" 200W for the entire Pirate Islands 2015-2016 generation. Another 15-20% in 15 months and 8GB of VRAM once HBM matures. I really hope if AMD improved the perf/watt so dramatically, that they take it to the max and give us a 250-275W card. 😀

Same. Good quality PSUs are so cheap now that you can get LEPA (Enermax brand) Gold Modular 800W for $80, Rosewill 1050W Gold @ 40C for $100, and even Rosewill 1000W Gold @ 50C for $100! Not long ago Seasonic had the X-1050W Gold on sale for $110 on Newegg. PSU cost has now become a non-issue for Micro-ATX cases or larger, which probably about covers 90-95% of the desktop DIY market.

I think a market exists for mid-range 130-180W cards and high-end 250-275W cards. 4K and multi-monitor gaming requires as much performance as you can throw at it and high-end gamers spending $1100-2000+ on 2-3 flagship cards don't care for 200-300W of extra power usage as long as the extra performance is there.

Going by these numbers, "Jack" is more efficient than GK104: "Jack" - 65.6/197 = 0.333 vs. GK104 - 56.6/185 = 0.306. If this is true, AMD really needs to take advantage of this and ship a card with a 250W TDP and push the performance envelope higher. Kudos to nVidia for grabbing as much market share as possible first, though.
 
The earlier OpenCL leaks have it ~50% faster than R290X. That would only be possible on 20nm, for the mid-range Pirate Island to defeat R290X by that margin.

This means the big daddy R390X would be aiming at 75% or greater than R290X. Definitely 20nm with HBM (which rumor suggest may offer a lot on power savings due to a less complex bus & memory subsystem). There's just no way they can pull that off on 28nm.

If true, definitely will be more than competitive against GM200.

But you are right, it could be R390X, 30% faster at much less power consumed, is definitely achievable on 28nm with HBM.
 
what about the driver,

14.11.2 beta

Id there anything in it? does it ID a new AMD chip? That could make or break this leak, if there is further confirmation of a new GPU in the driver
 
If its like other prior launches, as soon as reliable leaks come out it means AIBs have got their hands on it, so at most, a few months out to launch.

With some ramping up of the leaks, I suspect Q1 2015.
