Chevy Cavalier -- POS?

My mom had to take her 2k1 Civic in to be repaired (accident) and they gave her a new Cavalier (8000 miles) as a loaner. Here's some observations that i made:

1) the engine is LOUD
2) the interior is noisy
3) the door locks - what were they smoking when they came up with that design?
4) emergency brake - see #3
5) the shifter - very thin, very flimsy
6) i popped the hood to check out the engine. you CANNOT just gently put the hood down and then gently push on it to close it. you have to lift it up (high), and let it drop.
7) even the hood squeaked when i opened it
8) interior - very spartan, not very comfortable
9) the radio does not turn off when you turn off the engine and remove the keys

so much for my 2 minute test drive. any comments?
 
I don't know anything about the Cavalier, but I think point #9 is supposed to be a "feature." My parents bought a new 2 weeks ago Dodge Caravan and it does the same thing.
 
My 1995 Cavalier is a POS. (if I could make the POS part blink, I would.)

I'm trading it in this week. Bye bye shyte GM, hello German quality!
 
If you wanna be really 1337, you can even get a JDM TRD bodykit for it! 😛
And yes, I'm being dead serious... since Toyota does sell them in Japan.

a "feature"? don't they realize just how many dead batteries that will lead to?
 
Its cheap and repair cost is considerably less than a Civic or Corolla. The current model has lasted for 5+ years, so most of the bugs has been worked out. OTOH, its simply outdated compared to the other compact carsout there. Despite that its still the no.3 in compact car sales behind Civic and Focus, so people must like it for a reason.

that's what i used to think until i actually drove one. cheap to repair? YES. requires maintenance often? ______ very well thought out? *I* don't think so.
 
My '93 Cavalier with 170,000 miles on it has never been in the shop other than the usual stuff...brakes, exhaust, oil change, etc. I can only wish my next car is as dependable.
 
best friend had one and it was fine the first year (our sophmore year) but by our senior year everything went wrong with it, surprisely it overheated when we went too slow or came to lots of stops but didn't overheat in nonstop freeway traffic. Then the wiper blades would go off randomly, and basically every little thing kept rattling or falling apart. Maybe he just got unlucky but one cavalier that I was in consistently definitely was a lemon after the first year or so.
 
my friend got an early 90's model cavalier(5speed i think) with 300 000km on it, it's been serving him well

my ex-g/f had a cavalier, and it is a feature. I think it turns off once you open the door.
 
I had to drive one for drivers ed and I agree - they suck. BTW - who gently puts their hood down? I don't even see owners of show cars doing that. If you're so worried about breaking your car or something because you let your hood drop then your car sucks.
 
I have a 94 cavalier with 125k miles on it. It is a POS, but it is reliable POS 🙂 That is what I get for letting the wife drive the new 2k maxima.

OUCH!

Cavaliers are pretty reliable since they are a dime a dozen around here, they don't just age very well. Mechanically they are sound (for the most part)

The Cavalier Z24 are pretty popular here in Toronto, lots of people have them and most of them are riced up also.
 
The Cavalier is massive heap of crap. One of my friends just had to have a convertable one. She bought this thing, and within a month it was being worked on. After that, everything kept breaking on it. She eventually was able to get her money back on a lemon law case, and bought a VW New Beetle instead.

my sisters 98 jetta you can play the radio without having the keys 🙂

My mom just bought 2 new Cavelier's for some reason .... A stock sedan and a LS Sport coupe.

The sedan sucks ass...typical crappy car.

However, the LS Sport is pretty sweet...has a totally different engine,suspension, and alot nicer looks.
 
A little OT but I'm reminded of a funny story regarding my Cav...
I assume you're all familiar with the paint jobs on some GM cars fading drastically? The guy at the shop said it's a known flaw with some GM cars, the paint they used was flawed or something. Anyways, my whole car was faded really bad...looked really pukey. 🙂 Then a couple of years ago it got stolen. The cops found it 3 weeks later. The whole car was trashed...radio ripped out, antenna ripped off, all 4 sides were badly keyed, they even stole the horn from the middle of the steering wheel (must've thought it was an airbag 😀 ). Anyways, the shop and AAA get together and decide to give the whole car a nice shiny new paint job...EXCEPT THE ROOF!!! The roof hadn't been keyed. Now, I have a nice black paint job on the car, and the roof looks like the paint is 1000 years old. 🙂
