Chelada style beers. . .

episodic

Lifer
I've made a post here about my inability to find a beer that I like. I found I'm much more a hard cider kind of person, but find them real expensive in my area, 9.99 a 6 pack.

I've recently tried miller 'chill' the 'lime' flavored beer, and find it passably ok. . . (in the most bland sense). But since it doesn't revolt me totally, what other things should I try along those lines?

One thing I hate, is that all of the beers I've looked at like this seem to only have like 4% alcohol, while other normal beers stay around 6%. . .

Brewing your own? I often find unfiltered apple juice at Trader Joes for $4/Gal. At that price, you can make 5 gallons of hard cider for about $25. That translates to 2 cases plus a 6 pack. Visit your local brew shop and get started man!

You must've never read my posts:

I live in the middle of nowhere.
There are no trader joes (in my state possibly - certainly not within 2 hours)
There are no local brew places or anything like that. . .

Well, there's always the internet! Are there no fruit growers where you live? No trees in anyone's back yard? If all else fails try, www.brewyourownbrew.com

The REAL Chelada beers are the ones with Clamato and beer/salt/lime. They sell them in a 24oz can with Bud or Bud Light. Disgusting

If I lived out in the middle of nowhere, I'd develop a taste for Kvass or Sviss before I'd drink a Bud.

Wait, I've got the answer. How about mead? You can make it sweet or dry.

Mmmmmmm. Strawberry mead is good stuff. How much honey does it take to make a batch?

you like miller chill? have you tried bud light, coors light, those? they are all pretty plain tasting and go down easy. you could always drink mikes hard lemonade, vagina

I usually use between 9 and 15 pounds depending on what ABV I'm going for.

Holy schnikes! That's bulk honey. That works out to be what...around 2 gallons or so (15 pounds)? You have a beekeeper you work with to get that much? I don't think I've ever seen honey in anything bigger than a 32oz bottle.

There's bee keepers all over the country but, most health food store carry bulk honey.

One of the things I like about brewing is networking! Drinking is serious business.

Actually, 4 to 5% is pretty much the standard for most mass produced, horrible tasting american beers (bud, miller, coors, etc.).

I tried one of those lime flavored ones and it was nasty. Note to self: adding lime flavor to beer that tastes like piss does NOT make it taste any better.

If you don't like beer, why are you trying to force the issue? Why don't you get some cheap rum and a couple cases of coke instead?

dos equis and blue moon are pretty good, and dont really have that bitter taste. i dont really drink beer, but when out with friends ill drink either of these if they are available.

Alcohol % in beer isn't just a variable you can adjust at will and keep the beer with the same flavor/weight.

Alcohol % is a function of how much malt goes into the brewing process. The more malt, typically the more heavy, and rich the beer is.

The Chelada/light/wheat beers are light in weight/texture because they aren't smoothered in malt, and thus they are also lower in AC%.

It's sort of like the difference between drinking unsweetened vs. sweetened ice tea. The sweetened one is just a richer, more full feeling drink. That's how malt heavy beers work too.

I will eat and drink just about anything, but I find that chelada stuff just about the most disgusting stuff I have ever had.

you can make micheladas yourself. juice of two limes + salt + a corona, or dos equis, or bud light.

there are a lot of taquerias around there that make good micheladas with clamato, they go really well with mexican style seafood. a few micheladas + 2 dozen oysters on the half shell + ceviche = win

I highly recommend Blue Moon. Very tasty without being overly strong or bitter. If you feel the need to add fruit, it's good with an orange slice in it.

I'm not a big Corona fan, but it's not bad with a slice of lime and definitely far superior to drinking a lime flavored miller or bud.

Bud Light Lime is pretty good, much less sweet than Miller Chill.

AVOID Michelob Ultra Cactus Lime. Stuff is horrible.

Pyramid Apricot Ale - frutiy smooth wheat beer that is quite good.

Blue Moon White Ale or Sam Adams White Ale are both good and smooth flavorful beers. Add a Orange wedge and its mkaes it fruity and quite tasty.

I highly recommend Shocktop or Blackberry wheat by long trail. Both are kind of regional to the northeast but are amazing. They have a bit of a fruity flavor to them that I think you're looking for.

Me and my friends feel the same way.

To mix it up once and awhile, we'll get Bud Light Lime, but we absolutely cannot stand Miller Chill.

We get Shocktop here in Nebraska.

Yeah I like Bud Light Lime far more than Miller Chill... but regardless, I tend not to drink them often. I've been getting into the better, though more expensive beers. Though recently I've been sticking to the many varieties of Sam Adams. Their Porters and Stouts are currently the most common I buy. Though as it is getting warmer, I'm feeling less like drinking the heavier beers. Warm/hot days, I really really want a refreshing lighter beer.

Sam Adams White Ale is decent, I like it far more than anything Blue Moon.

But cannot wait until Sam Adams releases the Summer Ale. I absolutely love that beer, a perfect refreshing poolside, cookout, or summer night beer. And it doesn't skimp on the good stuff either.

Shocktop in Indiana and Florida. Delicious.
