Just use Southwest. It's still, generally, the best thing going for infrequent travelers.

I won't even tell the people I hate to fly Spirit. Nobody deserves that.

I would gladly pay a little bit more to fly SouthWest or any other airline to avoid Spirit. Same reason I would gladly pay a bit more at Target to avoid Walmart.

ridiculous!

I haven't flown since 2008 and before that I flown all the time. I'm not sure if I'll fly Southwest where there is no fee or spirit. Thing is, going to Chicago Midway is cheaper than O'scare. But it's a rough 15 miles out of the way from where my cousin would pick me up since O'scare is closer.

My question here is: What in the world is before online check in and durinig online check in? I assume you check in over the Internet?

I plan on taking my laptop and I guess just to lug that with would cost $40-$55? I might even be able to pack everything I need in one back pack since I only plan on being there three days. So that would be an additional $40-$55? Or maybe not?

Why would you check a bag for a three day trip? I've taken trips to Europe for two full weeks and got everything in a carry on. Also, if you fly a cheapass airline, prepare to be nickeled and dimed for things like carry on.

Was the cheapest. And the other airlines have similar fees.

Because they suck the worst. By a lot. Fly on them once and you'll see. They charge for EVERYTHING. Surprised there wasn't a credit card swiper for the bathroom. And their service is abysmal.

just carry a big book bag with the essentials you need. you can buy stuff like toiletries in Chicago. Costco used to sell a bag that fit the spirit size guidelines but I think it had wheels, which spirit said is no good anymore. Ebay has some too. Something like this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Spirit-Airlines-Free-Carry-On-/252102752165?hash=item3ab27eb7a5

This is a good post on why you wouldn't want to base your buying decision only on price:
http://www.theflightdeal.com/2015/0...es-not-feature-deals-from-spirit-or-frontier/

Basically spirit usually only does a few trips back and forth between two cities. When the early flights get delayed the other ones end up being delayed also. If a flight gets canceled you might not get a seat until the next day or even days later because they have a tendency to overbook their flights.

If you do go with spirit you should buy tickets at the airport if possible. You save $15 per flight.

Because with that airline a checked bag is cheaper than a carry-on bag.

When you talk international flights across the Atlantic you are given a free checked bag on pretty much every airline. Not everyone wants to wear the same shirt three days in a row just for the sake of packing light. When I went to Europe I was going to be in 3 different climates, 80 degree highs/ 65 lows, 65 highs/40 lows, & 35 degree highs, I packed accordingly. Some who I met up with followed the "pack light" mantra, and I ended up having to loan my own clothes to them because they were absolutely freezing during a few parts of the trip.

As for luggage fees, I was shocked on my return from Europe, long story short the final connecting flight New York > Chicago after an overnight layover at the check-in kiosk with United Airlines the checked bag first came up at a cost of $120!!! I didn't pay it because my bag was previously checked, but that is an insane price for a first checked bag.

When you deal with low-fare airlines, you simply factor in the cost of luggage into the price. If you have to spend an extra $40 on luggage but the ticket is $150 cheaper and at a better time of day, who cares if you're paying extra for luggage? You're still ahead on price by a large margin.

True but you should also factor in assigned seating, drinks, food, seat size, entertainment systems for long hauls, delays, and the peace and quiet of not being badgered to buy cologne/perfume while you're on your flight. etc.

First thing to do is stop using the childish term "O'scare". Makes you sound like a pansy.

A laptop is free to take onto the flight, and you're supposed to just fit it under the seat in front of you. Since checked bags are cheaper than carry-on fees, there will be unused overhead bin space on these flights, and when the stewardess is not looking toss your laptop up in the overhead. Once it's in, no one cares.

Yea? Major airlines nickel and dime you too. Last time I flew round-trip Chicago > LAX with United the meals were all extra charge, snacks were all extra charge. This last flight of mine New York > Chicago on United the entertainment system in the seats was all extra charge. Onboard wifi is always extra charge.

I don't know what airline you travel on but I've never been bothered to buy cologne. Maybe you didn't put on enough deodorant that morning and the other passengers on the plane were trying to get a message across to you? :p

What you say is all valid, but I mean, you have to do the same research for all those items even on the big established carriers too. Trip to Europe few weeks ago, friend had a destination wedding ceremony, many of my friend's family flew by Lufthansa, the biggest carrier in Europe. They decided to go on strike while most of his family was mid-flight and their connecting flights were delayed some by two full days! Shit happens even when you pay up front for the good carriers.

The last flight I had on Southwest, the group I traveled with ended up not being able to sit together, we were all split up because of how they do boarding. Don't want to risk being split up on the plane? Pay extra.

Errr, what? I had a different shirt for every day and I still got it all in one carry-on on my last two trips to Europe (one was 10 days, another was 2 weeks). The secret? Packing cubes are your friend.

Well that part is obvious, which is why I don't understand why the OP is complaining.

im currently in Asia for 2 weeks for work

I got all my crap in a standard "roll aboard" size suitcase and my latop bag- which is a backpack - didn't check a bag except when we flew from Changsha to Hong Kong because we were forced to (at least it was free)

just do laundry at the hotel - no need to carry a giant bag

But he's not complaining. He's just asked a question or two in regards to bags.

What we're hearing is a lot of complaining from people that don't approve of his choice of airlines.

Airlines need to start making those bag sizes smaller for carry-ons and enforcing the policy. Every time I fly I see people carrying fricken suitcases down the aisle and trying to stuff them into an overhead bin, taking up half the bin.

Check your bags you cheap bastard or bring less shit with you.

IIRC, there was a proposal recently to shrink the size of approved carry-on bags and it went nowhere because people were outraged. I do agree that the current limits need to be enforced - 21/22" rollers are fine but you see people sneaking on with 26" rollers occasionally.

I've watched almost an entire flight board and not one bag was checked to see if it fit inside those test containers and there were plenty of bags that were clearly too large.

I went back east with my wife and rather than split up our luggage and carry two bags on the plane we checked one larger bag (a garment bag). Honestly, it doesn't take more than a few minutes at baggage claim to get your bag. We had one checked bag and one small carry on with our electronic devices in it.

Of course, the flight was packed and the overhead bins were busting at the seams...

Simply enforcing current policy would be sufficient, which is done very unevenly depending on the carrier/airport. Also getting the FAs to routinely tell the gate agents that passengers yet to board must gate check their shit because the bins are almost full would be good too.

I see this happen more and more frequently too. Flying used to be fun. Now I dread it...

Meh…domestically it's just a bus in the sky. Give me and exit row aisle on a major airline's mainline service and I'm good.

Flying can still be a lot of fun internationally in business or first. :)

I just flew with them for the first time about three weeks ago. Most comfortable coach seat I have ever sat in. I'm usually squirming trying to find a comfortable spot but not on either flight.

To answer the OP, you get one personal item at no charge. There is a size limitation on that personal item of 16" x 14" x 12". Stories vary on the zest with which they enforce that. The problem with rolling the dice on it is if they decide to enforce on that flight and you have an oversize item, it will cost $100 to have it checked at the gate. There is a $10 charge for not checking in online. So you will want to do that within the 24 hour window before your flight departure and print out your boarding pass. If you determine that you will need an additional carry-on or checked bag, it is cheapest before you check in online. The chart you've shown explains the rest.

I was gone for five days and packed toiletries, clothing and my laptop in a bag the above size. They were not scrutinizing bags but there were empty seats on both flights. On my return, I was the only one in my row.

I rarely fly these days. Only once every couple of years if that. Be aware concerning the rules for liquids. I was unaware that it applied to aerosols too and had to throw away a can of spray antiperspirant that was only slightly over their size limit.

$121 round trip Detroit to Fort Myers. Pretty happy with the fare but I hate flying out of Detroit as it is close to an hour and a half away with no direct route to get there. Flint is a piece of cake at 20 minutes. But Spirit no longer flies out of Flint.

Okay, thanks!

Ahhhh, no it doesn't. Pilots that fly into O'hare call it O'scare for a reason. Ask a pilot!
