I would have done the same.

By the time I had looked it up on the internet to see if it was poisonous or not, it might have gotten away or bitten someone.

Next time you go to a pet store, buy a feeder mouse and give it to the store's snake. That should cover the karma.

You know killing the snake might give you some sense of security, but in reality it will not make your child safe. It's important to teach children to leave wild animals alone, that's it's OK to watch but not go after. If she is too young to understand that
then she just requires constant supervision when outdoors.

That said, I don't know why some folks have the urge to kill snakes, but I know it must be a powerful one, from what I have observed.

Personally if I didn't know what type of snake that was I would have removed it by killing it or moving it. Either way it really doesn't matter, a snake is a snake, nothing more. Dead snake, live snake, who the fvck cares. I had a black snake out in the yard once and just played with it for about 15 minutes and then let it go on it's way. The other day while raking some leaves I saw a little brown snake, no longer than 8 inches. I would have killed that one since I didn't know what type it was. But unfortunately I didn't get to him fast enough, he got away.

KK

PS. you sure the head was triangle shaped before the stick got to it? :D

Wait a second... You've got a young child and you think rat poison is a better way to get rid of rodents than a snake? The snake *might* have been poisonous but rat poison is for sure!

If you're 100% against allowing a snake to live on your property then next time take the same stick you used to beat it to death and instead use it to pick it up and drop it into a garbage can then take it to a field and let it go. I'm guessing a snake that size has been around your area for a while and if it was biting people you would've heard about it by now. It was probably harmless and did more good than bad.

My old job had me in an area surrounded by marsh and woods. We had snakes (including cottonmouths and rattlers) there every so often and depending on size I would pick them up with a stick or large shovel and move them away from the building. And don't tell me you didn't have time to go get a garbage can because you had enough time to get a camera.

I never have said sh!t about rat poison, make sure we get that clear. I don't have and don't plan to have rat poison in my house as that is a great danger to my little one, agree with ya there.., But rest asure, I had time to grab a trash can, but never even thought about it... as I knew I was going to kill it. Not taking any chances.

Oh, and make sure you have your ducks in a row and know who said what before you pop off at the keyboard.

Thank You!!! Atleast I am not alone in my thoughts...

Now go get your big stick and defend your property against all these nasty predators. Snakes, racoons, 'dillers, opposums, your neighbors dog, etc...

Um, roll your eyes all you want. You quoted and agreed with his comments and those comments included rat poison. Excuse me for not being able to read your mind and know which comments you were referring to.

Either way, I think your actions were stupid.

A friend of mine once saw a snake sunning itself on his deck, so he went out and killed it. A few weeks later, he and a number of other neighbors started having mice problems. Coincidence? I think not. I would have just moved it, I'd rather have a snake around outside than mice inside my house.

I vote this guy the pansy of the day. :p

The only time I promote killing snakes is if they're poisonous and in a place they shouldn't be, or a random snake that somehow gets in your house. (Long story that happened to me two weeks ago. :p Killed the thing before I realized what kind it was, but there are copperheads in East TN and I wasn't going to take the time to determine what it was.)

Even then , if it was poisonous, I wouldn't approach it the way he did. Instead get a professional, and removed off the property and hopefully send it off to it's natural habitat. Can't believe he killed such a harmless creature.

yes, because parents are constantly watching their children like hawks???
wtf...
your parents never let you out in your own BACKYARD to play alone?
i pity you then.

That's the most ignorant comment I've heard about parenting. I would never leave my children unsupervised below the age of 12, and even over that age, there should be a sort of responsibility over them to make sure they aren't doing something they aren't supposed to....

"well my kid is old enough to run around my yard... didn't know he was playing with some firecrackers and burned my neighbour's shed" ...

that black rat snake was more beneficial to your yard than you realize. what an ass. The snake was dealing with a typical overreacting uninformed idiot.

Totally Agree. This is a the main reason why most animals and life is becoming extinct, because of human ignornace.

Um, the proof was in your hands. Just throw the snake into a bucket. Walk into your office and do some research, with a specimen, it's very easy to find what kind of snake it is. With the info, and deeming it harmless, you can easily bring it somewhere off your property. Free it somewhere else if you feel uncomfortable with it in your yard... geez.

Think before smacking it with a shovel..

Hooray for you? The snake isn't going to do anything to your kid, unless it's provoked in which case maybe your kid deserves what it gets.
