I'm almost willing to bet that that is a king snake. King snakes eat other snakes specially poisonous ones. They are immune to snake bikes and thus can overpower them and squeeze them to death while the poisonous snakes pumps ineffective toxins in to the king snake.

So when you see a Cottonmouth or a Copperhead in your yard, you can thank yourself for their being there.

From the other posts, I think he's from Arkansas.

Then I'm surprised he'd say they don't have rattlesnakes around there. Geez, they have like 3 or 4 species in Arkansas. Maybe just none in his area I guess. :)

Anyways, I found this link, so JzL, you might want to check it out:

"Is it a water moccasin?"

I say it is, but pry that mouth open (with a stick of course) and look for white, and then see what the eyes look like.

Tom

Thanks for the link.

We did pry the mouth open when it happened, and it was very bright white..... but at the time I did not even think of a CM as it is a good 100 yards from the nearest water (pond). When I leave the office here in a bit, I will look at its eyes and look for the "pits" as in your link.

If that were a poisonous snake, I might be able to sympathise with you. But it's not. Congratulations, you killed a harmless animal.

When we (as in myself, my sister and her boyfriend and my wife) came across one of them last week I didn't get a shovel fast enough to get it. It slipped under some tree logs before I could get to it.

Saw a different one last week on the other side of yard and it too got away before I could get it.

It is only the biggest and deadliest snake East of the Mississipi.
There's a bloody big difference between a Diamondback and a harmless King Snake.

If I had a kid and I had snakes in my backyard, wouldn't it be right of me to do something about it? Maybe not killing them but doing something about it? I couldn't be too comfortable having snakes in my backyard while my kid is playing there.

Killing it when it posed no threat to you is wrong imho. Someone commented that rat poison would take care of rats just as effectively as the snake. With this I agree, however, I'd rather have the snake than rat poison around. The snake would not harm the child, rat poison is another story.

what an idiot.

You are truly an idiot.

1. There are a lot of college aged males in ATOT.
2. Geeky college kids.
3. A lot of them.

You should have:
a) watched crocodile hunter
b) caught the snack and put it in a cage
c) posted the snack in FS/FT forums.
d) included in the description how girls think guys with snakes are more masculine (appealing to those constantly posting YAGT's who don't know any better)

You probably could have traded that snake for a 9800pro or something. But oh, no. Now about the best you can do with that snake is run around, scaring the children in the neighborhood, instilling into them the same irrational fear of snakes that you seem to be harboring.

p.s. Why hasn't anyone considered yet that there was a friggin BIG snake in his yard? Do you think the snake moved there and thought "well, maybe some mice will move in next door." You're not facing a potential invasion of rodents in the future... You ALREADY have them in the area, or plenty of other snakes or other food sources. Otherwise the snake wouldn't be that big and would have moved along a long time ago.

JzL deserves an award for handling this thread maturely, snake or not. I'm not convinced that anyone is 'right' here, but I am convinced, however, that many of you are snakes :).

"he Southeast has to deal with Cottonmouths which pose a real problem since they attack at anytime whereas other poisonous snakes of the Southeast only attack when cornered.

Cottonmouths are know to hang out in tree branches hanging over the water and purposely fall into boats as they pass under the branches."

Bullsh1t Cottonmouths DO NOT hang out in trees. The snakes you see in tree branches are Eastern Water Snakes(harmless constrictor). The Cottonmouth is far too heavy to hang out in trees over water. Not to mention they are non arboreal. If you look at the links you'll notice they look very similar.

A complete myth. There's an article about this in this month's F&S (Field and Stream). Cottonmouths (or "moccasins")as us southern folk like to call 'em, aren't THAT venomous. It's very mild venom, and a LOT of people who are knowledgeable who DO get bitten by them don't even seek medical attention. A guy I know who works outside on a farm (actually a private hunting reserve) has gotten bitten by moccasins numerous times over the years and never once had to seek medical attention. You just have to deal with intense swelling and sickness for a few days. Nothing a doctor can really do except for pain and swelling management with moccasin bites. Children would be different though, they need medical attention immediately.
