I think you should give a glowing positive feedback for the seller for being so honest in his description.

There are couple of places with service manuals; a lot of times you can even find them on ebay.

I figured 70/30 that they $460 Y drive board would fix it, mostly because the tv did come on for a second and would show the menu/no singnal text etc. The other 30% would be a new power supply (another 400 bucks). I was looking to spend about 1400 for a tv, so anything under that is good.

Once I got it home and and check with the manual, I was certain it's the S boards (temperature ones)... which it kinda was.

The guy was really nice (i picked it up in person and paid cash), so I won't tell him.

The initial story I got from the seller was that it needs the Y drive board (the thing that powers the horizontal electrodes). The guy gota $920 estimate to repair it.

Anyway when I go the tv home, I went online and bought a pdf of the oem service manual to get more info on the led codes - the tv would turn on, shut off in a second and blink the LED 3x till you turned it off.

Well as it turned out, 3 led pulses was a "temp over treshold / shutdown" code (ambient temperature inside over 77deg celsius or something like that). Well that didn't really add up, because even my toasted can't heat up that quick. So I popped the thing open to check the 3 temp sensor boards inside, thinking one or more was fried. Instead of that, I found one with a disconnected harness... plugged it back in and viola :)

edit:
I wonder, though, if the plasma repair place was after the guys money....or just completly clueless.

thats fricken awesome. oh and i hate you. i really do =( sniff i want to get a deal like that !

heh gimie the guys email i will mail him! hehe i feel for him LOL

Halik - How did you know what each board/component does? For example, you know what the Y-Board does. Was it just from the service manual or do you have experience with TV's and electronics?

I have a decent idea what those do - the service manual actually has explanation for each of the ICBs, down to semiconductor listings.

I've never owned a plasma before, but generally speaking I'm handy with a lot of things (cars/bikes mostly... )

$920 + $450 = $1370, which is still a helluva good price for a 50" Sony plasma. He could have re-sold it on ebay and probably made $500-or-so. As is, he could re-sell it now and make $1600 profit!

But I'd keep it...that's one helluva find!

Good for you dude!!! Just don't leave it on one of those news channels with the stock-ticker thing at the bottom (like Fox or CNN) for long periods of time. Also don't leave a DVD or a video game paused on it either.

Plasmas are VERY succeptable to burn-in. (like early CRTs used to do - but worse).

Other than that, Congrats!!

stop spewing old information. That was true for older plasmas, but it's not the case for newer models.
