check engine light just came on in my car...

is it safe to drive with the "check engine" light on.

BTW, I got it diagnosed and the mechanic said it was a cylinder 1 and 2 misfire?
What does that mean? how do i fix it and when will the light go away?

do you have a jeep cherokee?
i've seen that light on for a while in my friend's cherokee... its still safe to drive but i wouldn't go pulling a road trip on it... stay within distance of gas stations!

More data please.

Some cars check engine lights come on in regular intervals to remind you that you need an oil change or routine maintenance. Some turn on because of loose gas caps.

if you got it diagnosed, WHY ARE YOU ASKING US!?!?

perhaps the guy you PAID TO DIAGNOSE IT KNOWS WHAT TO DO!?!?!?

Mine came on a few weeks ago for a misfire, turns out I needed new plugs, wires and distributor cap. (96 olds bravada)

BTW, its an 97 Acura integar.....has about 109,000K on it....
the thing was that morning, I was really speeding to the airport to drop someone off, and when i got back home, exiting the freeway, the light came on....

I had a Crown Victoria and the engine light came on.

Ended up being a broken wire someplace. No one was ever able to fix it. I just put a piece of black tape over the light and forgot all about it.

so...lemme get this straight.

1) your check engine light comes on.

2) someone who presumably knows what they are doing diagnoses it as cylinder misfires.

3) you rush to ATOT to get advice on what to do.

Did you have a head injury between steps 2 and 3? Either you're dumb or just looking for attention, because the person who told you what was wrong would be the same one who could tell you how to get it fixed. I don't think your car will explode because that light is on, but I'm pretty sure it's not just for getting into the holiday spirit.

flame on.

edit: it probably is spark plugs (or related).

Those misfires should cause you to lose power upon acceleration. Happened to my mom's '96 Talon. We had to get a whole $hitload cleaned out and flushed, but that was just cause it was hardly maintained anyway. You should get it fixed before driving like that for too long.

Depends what your car's manual says. When my light went on the manual just said something like get the car checked at the next convenient time or something like that. I was on a road trip from NJ to IL, so I drove the rest of the way. At the end of the trip the light turned off and never came on again. Never found out what it was.

Well, here's the deal bee-iatch, STOP BITCHING....if you dont wanna help out, just dont reply to the fawkin thread, bee-iatch.

But for clarification purposes, here's the cliff notes version of what happened:
1. check engine lightcame on.
2. I took it into mechanics shop, however the main ASE certified mechanic was off that day.
3. So his so called "assistant" helped me out. He got out one of those trouble code readers that you plug into a socket in my car which reads the trouble codes.
4. The codes were p301, p302, and p1300, which means 'cylinder 1 misfire,' 'cylender 2 misfire,' and 'random misfire' respectively.
5. the assistant read the codes from the computer code reader, but does not really know how to go about fixing it. He asked me to go back when the ASE certified mechanic was in.
6. So, since I did not have time to bring my car into the shop again, I came to anandtech forums to see who knows enough from what i've explained can help.
7. ZeroNine8 starts bitching like a little girl! End of cliff notes!

He probably didnt notice it because he was exiting the freeway and was probably off the accelerator. It could be any one of one hundred things. Mine hasnt been firing on two cylinders after taking a lesson on being a submarine, still havent figured it out. :frown:

Driving with your light on is not good. Duh. Get it fixed ASAP or you can have major problems - even with what is a seemingly small problem like a misfire.

Oh and do yourself a favor and learn a thing or two about cars. Even my grandma knows what a misfire is. Ask your dad/grandpa/brother/etc to teach you.

Ditto on my Civic. The "Maintanence Required" light also blinks whenever I start my car... it's been doing that for almost 2 months now, and I keep on truckin'.

You know you can reset that.... It's scheduled to come on at certain intervals.

I don't know anything really about integras, but here's a suggestion. I would check the ignition coil. It's probably not plugs or wires (although those are probably due for replacement), as it would be quite a coincidence if the ones on cyls 1 and 2 both started going bad at the same time. A faulty coil could cause what you're describing. Ignition coil at Advance. Good luck.
