Cheapest way to travel between Los Angeles and San Francisco?

I traveled the country using them:
Auto Drive Away
In essence you deliver a vehicle from point a to point b. The catch... you pay for the gas!
Give your local office a call and see if they need anything driven to LA

In 1990 I drove:

Orlando FL - LA,CA
LA, CA - Seattle, WA
Seattle, WA - LA, CA
LA, CA - Seattle, WA
Seattle, WA - St. Louis
St Louis - Some small place in Georgia

I saw a lot of National parks on the way 😉

Greyhound is $40 each way if I am not mistaken.
If you can buy ahead of time, I think Southwest is around $50 each way, much better.

if iwere you id take the train and just chill and read a book or something, make sur eyou bring drinks and snacks as train food is expensive and crappy.

the cheapest, fastest way is to drive. the san jose mercury news did a race once, and the driver beat the guy on the plane and the guy on the train, and he wasn't allowed to speed.

honestly, if you're worried about driving your car "that many miles" WHY DO YOU HAVE A CAR? that's the automotive version of a fvcking plastic sofa cover. the whole point of owning a car is to drive it, and you're already paying insurance and registration, so you might as well drive it instead of letting it sit there.

I'm posting this from my hotel room in SF.

Stay in LA. This place is all the evidence one needs to prove that liberal femi-nazi same-sex-marriage hippie democrats are unfit to govern anything.

Why do you liberals like having crazy drug-addict homeless people on every corner of union square? I was nervous walking by all these dirt bags on the way back from dinner and I'm 6'2" 200+.

How often to these nut-jobs snap and attack some little japanese tourist while getting her picture taken in front of Old Navy (you just know it has to be a few times a month)? And how do these attacks not make it to all those tourist publications that call SF one of the most romantic towns to walk around in... is the tenderloin officially not part of SF?

And how are all these people who look like they're living waaay below the poverty line able to afford to live in the city? I thought real estate and rent were astronomical, yet some neighborhoods almost look like 3rd world slums.

Oh well. At least I get to go home on Wed. Goodnight now!

Yes, I get scared when I walk around in San Fran at night with a group of 4 guys.

Those slums you're referring to probably still cost like 1200 bucks a month for one room. Slums of San fran.

when are you going?

flying is the fastest, but driving is the cheapest. i'm from san jose (hour south of SF) and live in LA and do the drive quite a bit. it's not that bad once you get through the grapevine as the drive is flat and fairly traffic free after that.

if you fly, your cheapest if you leave from LAX would be on southwest, but that only flies into san jose or oakland. jet blue out of long beach will only go to oakland i believe.

i personally like the "rent a car" option, especially if you're going with the fiancee or a bunch of friends. split the cost of gas, and a tiny rental car (compact) is about 20 something a day.

If you drive, take 101. POS cars die on the Tejon pass on I5.

that would suck.

straight shot from Oakland to Los Angeles is 5 hours via I-5

straight shot from Oakland to Los ANgeles is 6-7 hours via 101.
- 5 hours from Oakland to Santa Barbara. Santa Barbara to LA - 1 hour or so.

It's only about 45 min difference. I've driven both many times.
Also if you get stuck on 152 going to 5 from 101, 101 may be faster. And it's a much more scenic drive and much flatter and cooler.

hitchhike

check college bulletin boards for someone going that way to split gas with

bicycle

boat

run/walk

if you dont have a lot of luggage, jet blue $40 LB to oakland then bart to SF? i'm not that familiar with the area sorry hehe

This is about right, just reserve it for two weeks in advance. Jetblue also has good prices. If more than one person is traveling with you, renting a car maybe cheaper, depending on whether or not you intend on using it during your stay. Then theres Greyhound, but it'll take forever, and it smells like feces.

hahahahahah SF isnt bad. Most people walk around, and although there are many crazy people in SF, they are generally harmless. One of the regional insane asylum's shut down awhile back and they gave all the patients bus tickets to SF, which is why there are so many. You have a higher chance of getting mugged in LA, or some place like NY than SF. Even Oakland isn't bad. I lived there for 7 years, and the only problem I had was my truck was broken into, but the cops nabbed him that night...and kicked his ass, and I got all my stuff back minus the hassle of getting a new battery and window. Apparently the guy was robbing everyone that night, but his batter died so he broke into my truck to get my battery so he could drive off with the loot. The cops caught him installing my battery! LOL

Anyways, if little asian girls can walk around at night in SF, a big boy like you should be alright. 😛
