Cheapest way to travel between Los Angeles and San Francisco?

I'd drive, but I'd really rather not put that many miles onto my car. It's been salvaged twice as it is.

Looks like the train (amtrak) will cost $80/person, flying will cost $150/person. Any other suggestions/recommendations? Thanks!

Aren't there other mass transit type trains that run between LA and SF?

Nope, sorry the thing i remmeber goes from San Francisco to San Jose...

There's the Greyhound that will cost you like $75 but that's a 11-13 hour trip.

The last time I went like a month ago I decided to book a flight less than a week before my departure date for ~$120 🙂

What are the days you are planning to leave? I used sidestep and got a quote from jetblue for $96 dollars flying into Oakland (LAX to Oakland). From Oakland you can take the AirBart (2 dollars) to the Bart Station which will can take you to most areas in San Francisco for about 3 - 4 dollars (I forget how much). Hope that helps.

I forgot, there is also a bus that will pick you up from the Orange County - ABC store and it cost about 50 dollars from there to San Francisco. About a 7.5 hour trip.

Hmm it costed me $100 for a 2 way trip from SF International to Burbank Int. via United Shuttle powered by Skywest. The flight was only 45 minutes.

Two years ago, I picked up someone in Hollywood(visiting my bro.) and drove him to San Francisco(where I live) and his father picked him up near the Golden Gate Bridge because they lived about 15 minutes north of me. I was looking for riders who can contribute some gas money so I placed an add under Craigslist. I found a driver who wanted to be home on Dec. 25 in the evening and he even wanted to pay for all the gas if I can help him take some of his stuff home. It worked out fine and he also drove 50% of the time. I felt that it was a win-win situation for both of us since gas alone cost about $40 and I had someone to chat with. I know that he could have been a ax-murderer but my hunch was right - he was a decent person who had an interesting life to tell...

Have you tried with code V148(20% off) on the Amtrak site? Also look at not only the Coast Starlight but the San Joaquin(LAX to Bakersfield to Emeryvile to San Francisco) 10 theoretical hours and maybe a little less expensive.

Go to chinatown and search/ask around for the charter buses. It shouldn't be very much, as the charter's compete with each other for riders.

Over on the east coast, one of those charters will take you from NYC to Boston for about twenty dollars!
