Funeral - YES!
graduation - it is under your gown, so sure.
interview - some companies would utomatically reject you for that.
Wedding - again after 6 a wedding is formal and you must wear a dinner Jacket

we're talking about FIRST suits, not the ONLY suits right? and in
Viacom Inc. Chief Executive Officer Sumner Redstone and President Mel Karmazin

aren't they wearing black suits?

interview - some companies would utomatically reject you for that.

and WHAT kind of company would automatically reject you for that? The mafia?

I agree.

Black suits aren't great for all-purpose use. Great for business, but not so good for anything else (except a funeral). I guess it depends on the type of business, but when I worked in NYC, black, grey, and brown suits were the business standard.

If you need to limit yourself to one color, you're better off with grey (unless you're +40, in which case go with brown).

No, those are blue suits.

Look, I love these forms. Folks here can rebuild a PC, hack into the CIA, tell you how to make a Wizard Costume, know who shot first Greedo or Solo, but damn near none of you ought to be allowed to dress your self for anything other than a Star Trek convention or RPG meet up. Look on TV at what teh national guys are wearing: Tim Russert, Chris Mathews, George Bush, John Kerry, John McCain, Sean Hanniday, Bob Novak, Pat Buchanon, Peter Jenning, Tom Brokaw, Dan Rather ( don't look at what Paul Begualla, the Rajin Cajin, or Alan Colbmes are wearing)

And, I hope I don't have to tell you not to wear anything like Jackie Childess, or Johney Cochran.

I'm going to have to pull the gay card here 😛 I dress myself pretty well. well enough to know that navy blue is a horrible color that's worth purging from the world 😉

Joseph Smith founded Mormanism.

But mormanism went on to found Mr. Mac, which provides affordable suits to missionaries far and wide. He was just going as far back as possible.

Do you live near a Chelsea Premium Outlets? Check out the Brooks Brothers Factory Store, you can get a suit there for under $350.

I agree with glen, go with navy blue or charcoal. Black just looks 'cheap' to me

Yeah I see where you are going with this, but all the people you name are public figures. If one was to go on TV, then most certainly you will see suits from tan, to gray, to blue, to black, to whatever... it's due to the fact that they are advised what to colors to wear due to psychological effects of the colors of the clothing and what is most appealing to television viewers and the general public. That does not automatically mean that what they wear indicates navy blue is the common uniform to success.

You state that businessmen wearing black can just as well wear a clown suit... I'm not even going to comment on that statement. Dressed for the public and what people actually wear and what's recommended for the first suit you buy is all different. And black or a lighter shade of black such as charcoal for example, is the accepted color. Even gray. Unless you are planning to go on tv. And even television figures ranging from Bush (all of em) to Jay Leno will sport gray, black, brown, blue suits....

So I see this Chinese guy at the wedding in a (get this) BLACK suit, and I say to him, "Mel Karmazin would quit Viacom before wearing a suit like that..."

Charcoal is a great color. I don't think anythign is wrong with it. But, pure black is awful. I can't imagine that anyone would wear it.

Why is he wearing a suit to his wedding rather than a dinner jacket?
