Cheap webhosting --> $59/year

Pros:

Cheap, (not free).
Free domain registration.
Loads of features, 5 databases, 200mb storage / 2G transfers, phpBB, etc

Cons:

Server has been down several times in the last year, for periods lasting several hours.
Mail server often goes down, meaning you lose both your email and their support email doesn't work.
Database server just went down, meaning my forums site and database-driven mail, e-commerce, etc, are all down, and have been for over a day, without any contact from them or responses to my emails.

Summary:

A cheap deal for someone looking to post a personal site, or something that's not "that" crucual to an organisation...online resumes, for webdesigners, perhaps? Not a "real" host (i'm switching soon because i need a more professional solution) but probably more reliable (in the sense of still being around after a few years) than the "free" webhosting places. Not a hot deal if you need a host for a business, for example, or for database work.

-Dave.

Two other affordable web hosts are:

HostPC.com 250MB/6GB for $25/yr with DirectAdmin control panel.

SolidInternet.com (currently not accepting new customers) 500MB/10GB for $59.95/yr. The only "catch" is no CGI/Perl support which shouldn't be an issue for most web sites. This is run by the very popular and highly rated web host, Myacen.com

Edit: SolidInternet is $59.95/yr not per month, thanks for the catch 🙂

jonnyfin - Not much. I took 10 days off so ElFenix could catch up (scroll to the bottom right) to reclaim the #2 loser position but the bastard tricked me and I ended up as #2 🙁

I'm about to sign up for UltraUnix.net web hosting taking advantage of their Hot Deal special.

The reason I chose UltraUnix.net is their server specs (Dual Xeon, 2GB RAM, 36GB SCSI), data center (CyberWurx) and reasonable prices ($13.99 for 2500/25 with resellers account).

This is my 10th web hosting account plus The Planet dedicated server I share with 2 other AT'ers.

I'm telling ya, the local web hosting market is where the money is at.

It looks like they have a smaller and cheaper version as well. $12 a year for 50MB/1GB and 5 POPs (instead of 25).

Sounds like a plan for Junior.

That's absolutely correct. I referred a co-worker to HostPC's $12/yr account, so far they are VERY happy with it.

They use it basically to host family pictures and webmail. For them it's a perfect match.

Rossman just out of curiousity did you sign up for a 1and1 account?

Nope, call me paranoid but I think it's a scam.

With web hosting as cheap as $9.99/yr with a BETTER control panel (cPanel).

I know of hundreds of people who did sign up for 1and1's free offer (expired January 21st) and are happy, good for them but it's just not for me.

I hope its not a scam since I signed up for an account but if it is they sure went through a lot of trouble to scam people out of nothing since most people haven't shelled out a red cent to them.

I'm sure you have nothing to worry about. Like I said, I am paranoid and skeptical.

Besides they don't have your credit card number or billing information.

ah, local hosting would be quite a venture... i just don't have the time now it seems.. grr. lots of start up work i can't get done now.

but, if anyone is looking for some high bandwidth personal accounts, http://www.midphase.com I hear is good. $8/mo for 1.5/50 (paid 1yr in advance) w/ a free domain (which you can transfer to yourself after a year). I'm goin for their "pro-phase" in a couple of weeks

i'm looking for ASP.net hosting with SQL server backend. Anyone know a decent hosting service that has these two features?

Me too... Anyone?

If you want a "cheap" solution ($95.40 for 15 months) to mid-priced ($443.40 for 15 months), check out www.crystaltech.com. If you want a very professional (and not-so-value but really neat solution - check out their "True VPS" option), then try www.invotion.com ($1,200 - $2,268 per year).

I've used CrystalTech a couple times for a couple clients and they have the best tech-support. The "d!psh!t" phone techs are their senior-level network engineers. It's 24/7 with a toll-free # and no limit on # of trouble tickets.

I've not used Invotion yet but our first account with them (using the True VPS option) should be coming in Tuesday. I can't wait to play around on a server that has 4 independant installations of Win2k3 installed. They say you can't get to the others - I gotta see this... 🙂

.NET hosting is still scarce and expensive relative to the *nix servers.
