Cheap SD card based MP3 player

reminds me of the old sony walkman of years gone by....
Nice price though.... the wife might actually like to use her SD card with it though.

Note that battery life is short for such a device. Commonly those flash based (removeable or fixed) MP3 players using an AAA battery will get 10 hours but these get closer to 6 hours. Sony makes one that gets a claimed 70 hours on an AAA battery!!! It's kinda pricey though and has fixed amount of memory.

sony gets incredible juice out of their mp3 players, however a rechargable AAA battery softens the blow of a shorter battery life

I am just guessing, but the sound quality could be drastically lower. Same was true with their CDP line, where basically anything beyond '95 production is considered pretty much 'garbage' when it comes to sound quality, whereas their older stuff like D-25 is praised to death and get ebayed at ridiculous prices. I had a panasonic CT470 myself, a good compromise between SQ and portability/batter life. Pretty much a moot point since there are better sounding MP3 players out there, but just wanted to make a point that longer battery life usually comes with some hefty drawbacks.

Personally, Sony is kinda meh in a lot of things they do, some of their higher-end products are top notch (R10, 777ES), but most of their mass market mainstream stuff is quite craptastic. Gotta love trinitrons tho, got 2 and would gladly pick another one up if there is a good deal 🙂

They do sell one for $7.99 that looks more Muvo-like after the same rebate

Sony has the new HiMD with native MP3 players that seem to have great quality with mp3 support. Too bad they still wrap DRM around your files.

One of the reviewers said that the next button goes to the next song on the list as when set on random. Also it's ugly, so I'm probably not gonna get it. I have a 1GB SD card though, so it was tempting.

This thing does not play any 320k mp3s that I have tried, all LAME encoded. The quality is bad enough that you cannot notice the bitrateanyways, but I do have to reencode.

EDIT: nevermind. That button is just a lock. The door slides open.

Anyone figured out how to open the battery compartment? There is this button that looks like it may open a hatch, but it feels like I will break it if I press hard on it. There is no mention in the manual about how to install the battery.

I actually think it looks nice. good deal. if i had an extra SD card and/or needed an mp3 player i'd go for it.
