Are there any 1080p Windows tablets from actual mainstream manufactuers (eg. available from North American retailers) with comparable pricing to the Android alternatives (given that Win 8.1 is supposedly free to OEMs)?

Does not have to be exactly the same and can account for a slight markup (due to 32GB storage vs 16GB). It seems the only options are all much more expensive however?

Lenovo Yoga 2 8 inch -
Android - $199. 16GB storage.
Windows - $299. 32GB storage. anywhere pen.
$100 premium for 16GB more storage and the anywhere pen.

Lenovo Yoga 2 10 inch -
Android - $199. 16GB storage.
Windows - $299. 32GB storage.
$100 premium for 16GB more storage.

It just seems like in practice you are still paying a premium for Windows. Well other then the Chinese tablets.

What makes this more "artificial" is the -

Lenovo Yoga 2 13 inch -
Android - $449. 32GB storage.
Windows - $499. 64GB storage.
$50 premium for 32GB more storage?

If you do not mind buying refurbished directly from Dell (still has the standard 1 year warranty same as a new item for free, upgrading to 1 year accidental is $50, 2 year accidental is $90, 3 year accidental is $120)

You can get the Core M Dell 7140 which is the the new and vastly improved model (reviewed here on anandtech for $320+Taxes+Shipping.)

Go here
http://www.dell.com/learn/us/en/28/campaigns/dgo_dfb_deals_page which is dells website with their current coupon codes

Choose the model that costs exactly 595.00 and during checkout enter the code VPJ4QLXQD?44W9 (the code will not work for other models, only the one that costs $595.00 and it will bring down the price to $320+Taxes+Shipping

Specs

Laptop Screen: 10.8 inch IPS Display with FHD (1920 x 1080) resolution with 10-pt capacitive touch

Hardware Upgrade: 24 Watt AC Adapter AC adapter cable, micro-USB (1.3m) Duckhead wall plug (US)
NO INTEL VPRO TECHNOLOGY ADV MGMT FEATURES

This is the improved model with the optional improved active stylus done by synaptics, it is passively cooled (the old 7130 had lots of firmware bugs and used a fan), it also has a SSD you can upgrade as well as the battery is replaceable (Picture). Dell purposefully made it so you can easily change out the SSD and the battery for this is a business machine and people demanded that from their business line. Ram is soldered in. It also has a slot that is capable of adding an internal lte card (not included)

Here is the notebook check review Link)

They also have numerous accessories (sold separately) which the anandtech review details including a travel keyboard, a keyboard with dedicated battery, a dock, a synaptics, active digitizer, etc.

Sure it is no wacom tablet but for this price I am not complaining. If I was not dead broke I would be buying myself one right now.

Note they also have a coupon for last years model with the 22nm Y series with 8gb memory and 256 gb ssd for $380. I would not get this model for I have heard too many people have headaches with the older model. The extra ram and ssd space is not worth it.

-----

What I would also consider though is the Dell 13" Dockable Latitude 7350 Tablet/Ultrabook. Personally I think this size is too big as a tablet, but ultrabook wise it is not bad.

Latitude 7350 $470 after Coupon Code Q08BFXCRN5ZRTR

Comes with a 3 year warranty included with the price, upgrading to 3 year accidental is $163.50 extra

Processor: Intel Core M-5Y10c (4M Cache, up to 2.00 GHz)
Operating System Windows 8.1 Pro
Hard Disk Drive 128 GB Solid State Drive
Memory 4GB DDR3 1600MHz
Laptop Screen 13.3inch IPS Display with FHD (1920x1080) with 10 point capacitive touch
Office Software Office 365 - 1 Month Trial (Internet access required to install & activate)
Web Camera 2 MP FHD Camera
Laptop Battery 30WHr, 3-Cell Battery
NIC Intel 7265 Dual-Band 2x2 802.11 AC WiFi + Bluetooth 4.0
Keyboard Internal English Single Pointing Backlit Keyboard
Security Software McAfee Security Center, 30 Day
Hardware Upgrade 125V Power Cord
45 Watt AC Adapter
Keyboard Cover
Keyboard Shroud
Tablet Cover

So for the extra money you get a 13" model 1080p, more storage, 3 year warranty upgrade, but also since this is a convertible clamshell the keyboard dock is included with this price and the keyboard has a second battery. So in effect if you were going to buy the keyboard separately you are just choosing between tablet size, or laptop size that can act as a tablet in a pinch but the tablet is so huge I do not think of it as a tablet but instead as an ultrabook.
