I just got a call from this company I sent my resume too for a help desk position.
Well it turns out they want someone with a BS degree and active security clearance(non of which were stated on the listing). Get this, the most they are willing to pay someone with a BS degree and active security clearance is $12/hr. :Q

Well I'm not qualified but even if I were there's no way I'd work for that low of a wage.

It's a help desk position. Depending on what they support and the contracts they have, the only place they can squeeze more profit out of their companies is paying their employees like crap.

I know it's only a help desk position, but I know other companies paying more, no BS required(AAS is however) and no security clearance needed.

a B.S Degree *AND* a security clearance should limit the labor pool quite a bit thus pushing up the demand for the wage. $12/hour for support is standard for someone without either qualifications from what i've seen.

Edit: p.s. that's the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard, whoever the HR person was that posted that job should be fired.

And those cheapo employers will suffer because they either won't be able to hire anybody or will be stuck with someone inexperienced or incompetent. Not to mention that if they do hire someone at that wage that person will likely skip out at the first opportunity.

Exactly. There are people with no BS or security clearance making almost twice what they're offering.

Not for nothing, but a lot of working-warehouse places will pay you more than that just as a regular floor worker.

Maybe it's starting at $12/hr depending on experience?

I started out at $17/hr doing HD right out of school and getting ~$20 now. Just depends on the company.

Someone will take that job at $12/hr. There are a lot of unemployed CS grads.

You make $20/hour doing help desk and you haven't been outsourced to India yet? Wow.

There may be, but I don't know how many unemployed CS grads with active Secret clearances there are.

I can't imagine any undergrad CS grads with a security clearance that would be dumb enough to take a job like that.

Yeah, the Security clearance is the BIG kicker there. the 12/h may not be that bad depending on where the job is located. But with an active clearance that is about HALF what you should be making.

The security clearance part will be tough for them, but not the CS degree part. When I post a job for a basic help desk/computer fixer person I get well over 100 resumes and the majority are from people who have a 4 year computer-related degree and are currently working in another unrelated field.

Thats why I am stuck working for the government. All the employment ads I see want Novell certs, cisco certs, be a microsoft certified dba, with oracle 10g on top of that, be a unix guru and have 10 years experience with SAP, etc, etc... Most ads I have seen pay less. A few pay more and I know people who have left for those jobs and they work 12 hours a day.

But not with an active security clearance.

For those that don't know how DOD clearnces work here's are the basics.

You must pass a pre-employment screening, if no red flags are raised you get a interim clearance. To get your final clearance(which takes at least 6 months) your past 7 years is probed. Everyone you knew, worked for or lived with will be interviewed. This costs several thousand dollars(for the company getting you cleared).

When you leave that company your clearance is no longer active. It can be reactived within 24 months should you get hired someone else that requires that level, but there is still work involved. It should also be noted that you can not hold a clearance your position does not require. Meaning you could have had Top Secret clearance doing XYZ and then take a position doing 123 but only requires a secret clearance. You loss the top secret.

What this company was asking for is the impossible, someone with a BS degree and currently working with another company that requires a clearance, because this company does not want to pay for it.

I so gotta get away from this area, too many military contractors looking for "educated" retards. I worked for a military contractor once doing a tech job for the Navy. It sucked. I was there 3 days. It was not worth the paper work and partial probing. I'll never do that again.

your company is one of the very few from what i've seen

i did helpdesk for a large retail chain and started at $19,200
when i quit 4 years later and the highest level of support i could go (1 level below the highest unless someone died or quit) i was making about $27k.

I work for another company doing HD and get $33K (started at $30k)
