The company I am working for. Doing help desk 1 duties where if nothing breaks I do homework (most of the time) pays me nearly double that. Although the last job I had I took technical customer calls for an ISP 8 hours a day praying for my next break, payed 14.50/hr.

Nothing wrong with a HD posistion. My company starts it's HD people at $40k/y.

your company is one of the very few from what i've seen

i did helpdesk for a large retail chain and started at $19,200
when i quit 4 years later and the highest level of support i could go (1 level below the highest unless someone died or quit) i was making about $27k.

I work for another company doing HD and get $33K (started at $30k)

I work for a huge banking software company. Our HD issues go beyond mapping printers and loading an OS on a PC. We do pay more but we have more that we require our people to do.

I am doing on site support for a travel agency that is part of a bigger company that does credit card rewards programs, and its quite the odd situation. I am the pseudo-admin but I get into a lot of situations where I end of calling the main office network admin because I am not technically a network admin, but merely system support at this point in my career. I wrestle with the salary debate every day when I have down time, which is alot, because I make only 27k/year with no certs but I do have a college degree in Poli Sci.

Half the time I am telling myself I have it pretty good and the other half I am telling myself that its not enough money to support myself. I live at home.

Gotta take into account the area too. Here $12/hour would be pretty high for HD. We start HD at $9, some of the larger companies star at $7.50-8, of course I pay $350/month for rent, which is a little higher than a typical student apartment, so $12/hour here would be pretty good for a HD position.

You'll never find a $350 van down by the river here.

My clearances were processed by a former 8A company I worked at. They spent nearly $15,000 getting my clearances taken care of. That place must be nuts if they think someone with a clearance is going to work for $12/hour.

24K a year with a BS degree? And I thought down here the pay is bad.... I see the OP's location is in Virginia. I thought VA and DC area are paying well.

No way in hell I will work for 24K with a college degree or I do so I can pay the bills and will get out asap.

Once again I'll chime in and say Chicago is a dead beat area. Plenty of contract work, which I don't want to do, the rest however either require to be proficient in TSQL/PLSQL/Sybase/MYSQL, have working C#, C++, Java knowledge, program asp/asp.net for 3 years, or pay crap, or, not surprisingly, both. I graduate in a couple of months (taking only one class in the evening now, all technical electives/requirements taken, basically as good as a grad but with 3+ years of experience already) went to an interview a month or so ago, they wanted someone with T-SQL knowledge, 2+ years C# knowledge, ASP.NET, and familiarity with VB/VBScript and basic shell scripting. I get there, they say they are actually looking for an entry level person, hah! Find me an entry level person with all of these skills. Later that day after interview I get an offer which essentially comes out to $19 an hour. Right. Keep in mind they also advertised position at $21-31 an hour. Heh...

Companies in Hampton Roads(100 miles South of Richmond) home of the largets naval port and master jet base for the Navy, Newport News Shipbuilding, Langely Airforce base and CIA HQ feel they don't need to pay.

There are VERY few unemployed CS grads who have security clearances.

Hell, if I were an employee of that company and saw that posting, I'd quit.

I just finished my 5th week of HD. I dont have a related major. I have previous experience but from the looks of my coworkers, experience is not necessary.

I make $18 an hour with no benefits and a lot of mandetory overtime, and odd hours.
The company is paying for my security clearance, so right now i have an interim one.

currently my hours are 4 AM-2:30 PM with two 15 minute breaks and a 30 minute lunch.

Is anyone interested? It includes 3 weeks of paid training and they are always hiring as with any HD job, its got a high turnover rate.

This is in san diego.

NMCI? No thanks. I tried that once, hated it. I was supposed to get 3 weeks training. We got 3 days and were thrown to the wolfs. All the supervisors were @$$ hats. I quit after 3 days.

lol yeah its nmci.. and i heard about some people getting 3 days of training then getting jacked up by being put on the floor. .. it sucks but after a while you get used to it.

Training was a waste of time... they're just power point presentations pretty much.

Well there was so much wrong when they put me and my group on the floor(one lie after another) we were told there would be team leads divoted to our area because we were new. They abandoned ship 30 minutes after we started. We were also supposed to only do password rest calls(never happened, we had everything). The straw that broke the camels back was when I got yelled out by some limp d!(K ex-navy guy(working for EDS) because I was late 5 minutes getting back from my break. I didn't even have a break, I spent the 20 minutes talking with a tier II who was helping me with an issue I ran into with a call I had.

Never again. Never again.
