Chavez dismissed criticism that moving the time only a half hour was quirky, questioning why the world had to follow a scheme of hourly divisions that he said was dictated by the imperial United States.

lol....what a nut

Maybe he should make an hour 58.7 minutes long. WHo gave the U.S. the authority to dictate that an hour is 60 minutes long?

In his live show, he called on his brother, the education minister, so that the two men could explain the measure. But they mistakenly told Venezuelans to move their clocks forward at midnight on Sunday, when the policy is to move them back.

Brilliant, simply brilliant.

When did we dictate that? Or are you buying into Chavez's conspiracies?

Wouldn't it have been just smarter to maybe...push school *down* 30 minutes? That way kids can wake up 30 minutes later?

edit:

hehe same mistake as the Chavez :D

Fugging brain dead. Any software that automatically and properly handles timezones and daylight savings knows where Venezuela is. Now that software will all have to be patched so that nightime processing (like the kind that moves your money around) will work. I bet some IT staff down there have been given their marching orders, which includes no sleep until Monday to get any potential problems identified.

Ya, it reflects something reflecting quirky, even poorly considered, rushed on nis part - and his comment about the US mainly detracts from the more real issues.

On the other hand, it's fun to see a president actually doing something for the good of the people as his motive, it's not often I see that under Bush.

All I know is that I feel so worthless this guy thousands of miles away in a country I have never been to, neither of which I know a thing about, scares the shit out of me and so, because I am so weak and helpless and lacking in self respect, I am going to devote a big part of my life making fun of him. If I can just get everybody in the world on my side on this, I am sure, just completely sure, I will suddenly and miraculously feel better. Oh please God, make it happen. I need something, some sort of self-superiority to prop me up.

For the good of his people? This is nothing but a publicity stunt.

Who cares. Half an hour is no big deal. It makes sense to have one standard for time. This has always been a stupid idea.

Can you begin to make any fact-based argument for your accusation or can you just say that your anti-Chaviez ideology makes you make things up however little sense they make?

What evidence do you have that the story that he received this as a recommendation and liked it for other reasons than 'publicity' is wrong?

This is a stupid move... and nobody can accuse me of being a "Chavez basher"... if he is "thinking of the children", he should do what Ceausescu did in Romania, in the '80s... and reduce the "regular" school hours from "50 minutes classes + 10 minutes break" to "45 minutes classes + 5 minutes break", thus saving one full hour every 6-class day...

How dare you question his motives you American Time Imperialist!

They will resist any invasion by US military that is bound and determined to force these capitalist time standards on the poor nation of Venezuela.

Moving the clock back a half an hour will have no positive affect on the good people of his country. Saying that it is for the good of the children because they won't have to walk to school in the dark is laughable. Stop being a (sic) "Chaviez" apologist - the guy is media whore.

wrong... heheheh did you read further down? he wants to change what timezone his country is in too.

Since first announcing last month that Venezuela would shift from four hours behind Greenwich Mean Time to four and a half hours, Chavez, his brother and other senior officials have given varying dates for the change.
