Charter internet price shenanigans

So I've been getting 30-35Mbps Charter internet for over three years now for $40/mo. That was a good deal to me - reasonably fast service, mediocre downtime and support. Now they're trying to jack me up to $68/mo for the same service saying my two year promo deal expired. I pushed them to keep the same deal (the guy I signed up with said nothing about it being a promo rate - they just offered me flat low price) but the CSR insisted that she didn't even have the option to offer a $40 rate anymore and the best they could give me is $50.

Before a million people chime in with descriptions of how much they pay for worse internet, keep in mind that I told them I don't really care about speed and they could put me on a lower tier. She insisted that 30mbps is the lowest they offer and there's no service under 68/mo standard.

Then I pulled up their website and found an introductory offer for a year at 30/mo. Wankers.

So thanks to their dishonesty I'm getting an extra $10/mo discount. Seems fair.

Yeah. I pay 30 for 3mbps. It's the best I can get here. I'd pay 50 for 30mbps. Just pay it and shut up, or shut up and pay it, your choice.

Charter commercials...

"Pick charter it's smarter"

Bugs.

There CS is hit or miss. I've had about half the folks I speak to flat out lie to me and come across as insufferable douchebags, the other folks were really good.

@Attic I've had the same experience. Everything about them is middle of the road, and so long as their prices are a little below middle of the road I'm ok with that.

@rudeguy depends who you ask. They claim my discount expired; I claim based on the dude who sold me the plan that they raised my rates. I suspect what actually happened is that the dude who sold me the contract BSed me and didn't mention the two year limit.

@TwiceOver the only other provider in my area is Verizon, and they start at $70/mo for a relatively crappy 15/5 service. No thanks.

@Slithery apparently you missed the part where I invited people to not go ahead and tell me about the worse deals they're getting. I'm peeved because their sales team jerked me around and gratified that I ended up going and getting a cheaper rate based on their attempt to charge me more... not bitching because 50/mo is a horrible amount to pay for good internet. Although now that you mention it, ISPs are price raping pretty much everyone in America. Basically the rest of the civilized world minus Australia and NZ pay way less than we do for better speeds. And it's not that ISPs here just can't afford to go lower - they're raking in record profits, eating government subsidies to finance their expansion to new areas, and paying off Republicans to prevent municipal options from competing with them. If you wanna bend over for Verizon, be my guest. I'll pass. Companies look for every possible way to turn a profit, and smart consumers look for every possible way to avoid being the sucker who drives profits. Caveat emptor.

Same Charter crap happened to me, I was paying about $40 for 25Mb, then they gave me a "free" upgrade to 30Mb. 3 months later my bill shot up to $70/mo. Right now its hovering around $60. Only other option is ATT at a slightly higher price for less speed.

There's cheaper prices, call back to to talk with a different csr, or walk into your local office if you have one.

I switched to a business account in February of 2011. Locked in at $80 ever since. Zero shenanigans. :shrugs:

OP, what state are you in?

Down here, we are stuck with dumb (ATT DSL) and dumber (Cox cable). Both of them are slow and expensive due to the duopoly. My DSL 1 year promo is about to expire and I can see that I will pay at least $10 more per month for the same crap.

This is all true. They have simplified their plans a lot recently. In some regions they only have one internet plans, which is the 30 Mbps. First year is $30/month, and then $40/month, and then $50/month (or something like that). Since you've always been a subscriber you are not eligible for this promo plan.

Of course, as you have figured out, if you keep pushing they may ended up giving it to you anyway.

*sigh* Ah, good ole Charter. I vaguely remember the 4 month dispute and complaints I file with the BBB just to end our service.

The problem is you listened to whatever some idiot said on the phone instead of checking the prices on their website or get anything on paper.

They will lie to you and with no evidence you will be screwed and the introductory offer is just that and for new people to get them to sign up.

Be glad that cheap price lasted that long as you were paying a reduced price for years and you were getting a great deal but they finally caught you.

@Svnla I'm in Denton, TX. Had FiOS for a while but wasn't really impressed with it. And they were charging me $50 for ~35mpbs a few years ago... now they want 70 for 15/5. Fsck that.

@TallBill yes, and unlike you I'm also capable of a) paying attention to the market and b) making useful posts.

My 2yr promo expired too so I'm paying like $60+. I could switch to 1.5 mb AT&T DSL for like $20 a month but that's like going back to dialup.

ponyo - try the same thing I did. Say you're quitting, when they ask why, tell them their service isn't worth 60/mo to you. They'll pry offer you the $30/mo offer. If they don't, call back and get someone else. Don't give them your account info at first so they can't make a note on your account that you're fishing.

Stop being a cheap fuck maybe, and your "problem" gets a lot easier.

Not my fault that 1, you don't understand how internet companies work and 2, you are openly trying to game the system.

Gee, I'm curious why there are so few replies. If it makes you feel better I pay $30/ mo for my fios.

30 for 30-35Mbps is nuts btw

i pay 70 for 10 -

the only way to get it faster is to pay for wide band which is like 250 a month

I'm currently paying $80 for charter business as well. I get about 20-25 mbps. Service has been top notch though since I can always get a tech within mere minutes and they always follow up etc. For the extra $ and the guarantee that bandwidth will be within 75% of the 20-25mbps range throughout the day, I love it. Also, I've downloaded thousands of terabytes of porn and have gotten no fuse over it whatsoever. YAY.

Same for me.
