Charging extra for paypal credit card fees on Ebay

I noticed that people will charge you a fee if you use paypal with a credit card. This screws everyone else who sells the same stuff and takes the hit. Would you report the guy to ebay and have them pull the listing?

This is not just an Ebay policy, but is also the law that you cannot charge more for accepting a credit card payment. The way I get around it is to up the price of the shipping and handling which is okay by ebays policies.
 
There are tons of people who actually do this and I know they've already been reported. But they still continue to do it, they don't really care. I don't think paypal or ebay plan to do anything about it.
 
If you win an auction and the guy hits you up the fee, do you still have to pay it even though he says it in is terms? It would be illegal to make you pay it.

Edit: Would you guys do it if you were selling the exact same thing?

I've been reported but I still do it...I've saved myself over a 1000 in the past year....to me it's worth it. I also jack the cost of shipping up too to cover my ebay fees. If they complain I do remind them that it was clearly stated in the shipment terms and also that it's the price you pay for dealing with someone with no negatives and over 400 transactions. I also haven't been busted by ebay again because now I say that the buyer pays an extra insurance/handling fee if going through paypal. Oh yeah, I also charge extra for insurance so it looks like my inflated shipping cost to cover ebay fees is in line with everyone else's.

What did ebay say to you? Did they close the auction or anything like that?

 
They warned me and said if I had 3 strikes they'd close my account or something. The thing is then I made it more discreet🙂 Whereas before I had buyer pays a 3% fee for using paypal, now I put buyer pays an extra insurance/handling fee if paying through paypal. So effectively, ebay won't shut me down because I don't exactly state the fee I'm charging...and it looks like an insurance/handling fee.
 
As far as I'm concerned, they should be able to. How is it screwing other sellers exactly? Why don't you just say $X.XX discount for people paying for money order.

The reason its bad is that either everyone can do it or no one can do it. I just don't take credit card paypal because I would lose $20 everytime. The only problem is that my bids might not run as high as people who take credit cards. Then there are those that take credit cards and charge the paypal fee on top of the final bid price. This screws us who either take the hit or don't take cc paypal. You can not also say that the bidder gets a discount for using a MO or cashier check.

I am not trying to screw anyone, just level the playing field. If he is going to charge the fee, then so will I.

Why does paypal still charge fees, even thought ebay owns them? Because they can.

 
Let's say you would normally charge $50 for 256MB DDR SDRAM.

Just charge $55 instead and offer a "discount" if they pay via cashier's check/money order or NON-CREDIT CARD Paypal (assuming you do not have a premier or business acount because then you're screwed).

I'll agree...you are getting screwed...but like in any market place you should adjust🙂 I'm not going to not accept paypal cause I clearly wont' get as many bids. THe way I have it, I still make the same amount of money, can take paypal, and I don't lose on fees🙂

Ummm....this is still doing what you were doing before whether you are stating a percentage or not. You state clearly that you charge extra for using paypal and THAT is what is against the law and TOS. Sorry, but you still can get busted. Read this again:

You are clearly breaking the law and the ebay user agreement.

I'll agree...you are getting screwed...but like in any market place you should adjust I'm not going to not accept paypal cause I clearly wont' get as many bids. THe way I have it, I still make the same amount of money, can take paypal, and I don't lose on fees

The paypal fee is so small I can't believe that people actually charge extra for it. Sellers should be happy and thankful that something like paypal is around (I know I am). They get their money fast and in a convenient way. No trips to the bank and no worrying if the money won't clear (ie. check). You even said yourself you get more bids, hence more money, by accepting paypal and that should be more then a good enough reason not to charge a fee. If anything, for the simple fact you are already getting more money just for having the convenience available. To charge a fee for something that provides so much to a seller is just flat out wrong on every level. I don't see the store you walk into to buy your grocieries charging you a fee for paying a certain way. I am sure you would be quite upset if they did too. These companies eat that fee as a way to be convenient to their customer who they want to come back and spend more money on their store.

I understand your thinking now. So basically you want everything for free. Despite the fact that ebay and paypal are providing a useful SERVICE to you and is letting you use their servers (which they need money to maintain), getting you more exposure, and more money. Why don't you just sell in the newsgroups? There are no fees there. Oh, that's right, newsgroups suck and you can't get **** for money. Hmmm....interesting.

Listen, I am not saying that sellers should have to pay for everything. In fact, I believe that it should be an equal split for the seller and the buyer. Ebay and paypal are just as convenient for both parties. I would have no problem with an equal split of fees, etc.
