I actually owned a Weber Performer (!) for some time, but I couldn't seem to get the drift of maintaining temperature very well. My dad's coming to shishkabob some stuff, so he'll show me.

You might consider an egg. An egg is not that much more than a good gasser, and food tastes soo much better. An egg has very precise temp control.

There are some specific tricks to webers and eggs, so you might want to post asking for tips on whatever you get. While there's a learning curve, once you get the hand of it they're almost as fast as a gasser.

Get a Big Green Egg. For most part a large egg is enough but if you are going to have parties with more than 8 people all summer long then get the XL.

This

I have a Char-Griller Akorn Kamado Kooker. It can smoke @ 220deg for 14+ hr without adding more lump or cook a steak @ 700deg. Lowes sells them for $299. Lots of good tips here http://www.kamadoguru.com/

IF your worried about temp control then get a gadget like these

Weber kettles are great. I have 3. 22.5, 18.5 and smokey joe (all cheapest versions mostly for the fact that they are more portable, I like it that way).

I can't/couldn't justify getting more expensive versions as the lower bucket seems worthless to me and side table as well. Both also go against portability.

I can take the legs off the pack all 3 grills to go (which we do a lot).

I don't use my gas grill at all.....

WTF do you need three grills to travel with, do you live with gypsies?

My record is 24 hours on my large big green egg with out adding more coal. I was cooking 30+ pounds of pork shoulder at 200 degrees. It was just falling apart and very juicy. The bark was incredible with a half inch smoke ring.
