I have done this with my Apple Airport card under Mac OS 9, but so far I have found nothing that supports OS X. I didn't try this with my Netgear MA401 802.11b. (I can't now anyway since I no longer have the card.) I know there is no option for it in the drivers, but then again there isn't one for the Apple Airport card either. I just downloaded a hack from somewhere. Versiontracker.com maybe.
Interestingly the reason I did this was for "free" internet access while I drank my coffee at the local coffee shop. Shhhhh....

Actually, the owner said if I could figure out a way to access their network I wouldn't have to pay for internet access. It turns out that all that was done on the network was to exclude unknown MAC addresses. So I just rented one of his rental 802.11b cards, copied the MAC address, and voila! instant access. So for the few times I've gone and done this I just check to see if anyone else is there with a laptop and 802.11b. If so, I won't use mine since I don't want to screw up their system. Lame security if you ask me. There isn't even WEP active.
Anyways, I don't bother doing this anymore because I'd rather just read the paper.
