Hey I have nothing against the Elise, I'm sure it's boatloads of fun. I already have a summer car (Mustang GT) and a winter car (Jeep Grand Cherokee), the Elise is far too impractical to justify a 3rd.

Not to mention I probably couldn't drive the damn thing, I took a ride in a Miata the other day & while the passenger seat wasn't too bad for me @ 6'2 the steering wheel would have to go through my legs for me to fit in the driver's seat. The Elise can't be much better.

Viper GTS

Actually, the Elise has quite a bit of headroom and your legs are pretty much straight out in front of you as you are sitting on the floor. I am 5'11" and my friend who rode in it with me is 6'4". Once inside he had plenty of room. It's getting in and out that's the trick.

There is a video I have linked at work. I'll post it when I get there later on.

Yeah, the big problem is that you cannot use the windshield frame as a leverage point or it will pretty much fold in on you since it's just fiberglass.

The video is near the bottom of this page. Someone want to save it and host it? This is really the best way to get in and out of an Elise/Exige if you're over 5'10".

The lotus exige edged out the Honda Civic Type R by 5 seconds. There are not a lot of details to that list though, it's probably an older model.

The date of that run was 11/2000. That is the older non-Toyota powered Exige. I'm sure a new Exige S could substantially improve on that time.

I'm pretty sure nobody has an instructional video about climbing into a dodge charger.

Edit: not counting the Dukes of Hazzard, that was a special case. ;)

It's part of the charm of the car. ;)

Seriously. Performance cars are not practical or fun to get in and out of repeatedly. Unless you really love the car, then it's part of the character of the car.

I kinda do what this guy does with the Cobra; placing my hand on the door sill to carry my weight and lift myself out of the seat, rotate both legs out, and up and out. Yay for low slung cars with bolstered seats.

I used to work for a rather heavy set guy (350+ lbs) and he had a Lamborghini Diablo. It was quite comical watching him get in and out the car when he brought it to work. He sort of just rolled out of it.

I have a Mustang that's the same body style as that Cobra. It can be difficult if someone is parked too close to the door. Long doors don't make it easy to get a good opening. But if the door is fully opened, it's no problem. The seating position in the Mustang is significantly higher than a Lotus Elise also.

I understand why they do it, and I like it... sometimes. I have endured similar torture from driving my old 93 Ford Probe GT. I had to have the seat almost flat to drive it, and every time I hit a bump my head hit the roof. For the first couple of years I thought it was totally worth it because the car was great fun to drive. Maybe I'm just getting old now, but I don't want to have to endure that kind of thing in my primary car.

As a second weekend/track car, no problem. An Elise would be fantastic fun.
