we had a tree taken down and the stump removed. cost $200 (and we got a bunch of wood chips).

far better then paying what you want for chain.

He said there are 30 of them.

oh well..just tell them they did wrong tree..29 times...

if he had a bulldozer couldnt he just run them over and knock them down?

well its highly dependent on the size of the tree, if its tall and the top breaks and lands on you, it might not end well

You're not going to get the roots of a tree any bigger than about 8" in diameter with anything less that a tractor/dozer.
I pulled some that size and smaller with my 4x4 F250 PSD and it was a chore.
What are you going to fill the holes with or level the ground with?

I'm still not sure why the OP wants to pull the trees down instead of cutting them then removing the stumps. Seems like a much easier/faster/safer way to accomplish this. Maybe if they were small trees, but not larger trees.

Pulling trees down. Dont really want to pull the tree down on me. May go to plan B. Pushing trees down.

chain saws arnt expensive

thats what i was thinking... you only need about 30 ft to pull a stump.

I don't know what is more 'Darwin'. Pulling down tree or trying to use a chainsaw with no experience.

Heres some of the trees that gotta go.

Click

You can see some more here

Click

I'll probably take out some of the live ones with the dead ones to clear it up quite a bit. I'm buying a Stihl this next week.

The ground leveler.

Click

The stump puller

Click

The semi final goal. Pond planning probably wont kick off for a while.

I HAVE A DREAM!
EDIT

I forgot to mention I have since modified the trees that will be going in. Birch is too thirsty.

Huh. Well, I've done both so I think it'll be ok.

Regardless of my chainsaw and axe experience, I am not a logger and climbing 30 or 40 feet up and using a chainsaw is NOT my idea of fun, not by a long damn shot!

If I get enough chain I can climb up, hook up and go like hell. I can cut'm down and pull the dead stumps but if the trees have any green on them I dont think I have enough tractor to get it out. 30 foot of leverage would really help.

Oh come on...

Don't you watch Axemen on TLC?

Just use a chainsaw, make 2 cuts on the side you want it to fall towards.
Make one cut on the opposite side and yell TIMBER.

BTW, nice farm. I wish I had a homestead like that.

Some of those dead trees are ideal dove roosting. If it was me I would have to leave them just for that. 🙂 In fact, that looks very similar to a couple of locations I have dove hunted in the past.

EDIT: And it is the dead trees that you really have to be careful with. When you start pushing or pulling on them, there is no telling which direction all the parts will wind up going.

Thank you.

The thread I posted earlier about the guy who built the pond has inspired me. I've left my place sit for far too long, its time to "Git'r done!" so to speak.

One bit at a time.

If you know what you are doing then yeah, go ahead and get that chainsaw. Personally, I would not go anywhere near a chainsaw.

you can rent the chainsaw on a pole thing to trim it a bit first.

Chainsaws really arent that bad, you just gotta keep your head on straight.
Most of the bad stories I've read about start off with "I was tired" or "I was getting dark and I was hurrying". Often times a combination of both.

as long as he wears a hard hat and one of those orange safety vests he should be ok. They're called saftey vests for a reason, they keep you safe 🙂

chainsaws are not easy to control. go too fast and it will kick and off some piece of you goes. The condition you cited applies to all powertools though.
