Crazy end to the year. Alabama knocks off undefeated Georgia. Michigan knocked off #2 OSU last week in a convincing win for the first time in a long time and then thoroughly trashes Iowa in the B1G Championship game. Cincy undefeated for the year

Should be an interesting #1-4 ranking debate
 
I was going to watch Michigan Iowa last night but I checked the score and it was 14-3 so I didn't turn it on. Glad I didn't, final score was 42-3. Iowa must be reeling this AM.
 
According to ESPN they currently have this:
1 Alabama 12-1
2 Michigan 12-1
3 Georgia 12-1
4 Cincinnati 13-0

Doesn't "the committee" vote on the rankings on Sunday? Or at least reveal it on Sunday?

I like collage ball but i'm certainly no expert, but if i had to rank them it'd be:
1 Michigan
2 Alabama
3 Cincinnati
4 Georgia

Maybe even swap Cincy & 'Bama.
I hope they don't the possibility a rematch overshadow their decision too much.

Some talking head on Saturday said "everybody wants to see Notre Dame in the playoff so that might be a factor" in their decision. Fuck him! Everybody doesn't want to see them in there.
OK, well i don't. I'm tired of the years of the media love for ND. Just like being told for years that Dallas was "Americas Team" they seem to want the same thing for ND.
 
Not being much of a CFB fan, I've usually rooted for Bama in its bowl games. This year, I was pulling for them to lose just to get some fresh blood into the playoff. But I'll console myself knowing their win kept ND out of the playoffs. I don't like or dislike the Fighting Irish because they're popular, but feel a spot is wasted each time they play in a CFP game and get blown out (remember the 2012 champ game?). At least give some other team a chance to lose to the SEC.

We're lucky Baylor pulled off some incredible goal line stand. OK State would have jumped Cincy otherwise.

I'm certainly no expert but I've never been convinced by Cincinnati's schedule. Yes they beat ND but it seemed kinda weak otherwise in comparison. I guess we'll find out when they play Bama. And I don't think Michigan is going to pull off a win against freshly face-punched Georgia. The Bulldogs will be looking to prove themselves and then get a rematch with Bama

The main reason I stopped watching college football almost completely was the stupid ranking system and lopsided games that are only fun if your school is on the winning side.

Seems like the playoff format they have now hasn't fixed anything.

Of course the schedule isn't convincing, but if you don't play in a Power 5 conference, you can't play against the big boys in the CFP? Cincy might get rolled by Bama, but how is that different from what would have happened to ND if they had somehow snuck in?

It's noteworthy that Cincy had to post consecutive undefeated regular season campaigns, beat ND IN South Bend, and have other dominoes fall just right to sneak into the field. UCF had no such luck when they went 25-0 across 2017/2018 regular seasons. Like I said, it would have stunk if OK State had jumped Cincy by barely squeezing past Baylor.

Once they expand the field to 8 (or 12), at least a few more G5 teams will get a shot to get wrecked by Bama in the CFP. One of the beautiful things about "March Madness" are the upsets, where some mid-major knocks off one of the game's "blue bloods." It rarely ever happens in college football, but mostly because the opportunity doesn't exist.

The lopsided games are due to the distribution of talent. Although there are arguably a dozen (maybe more) teams that can attract top talent, it's pretty striking to compare a Nick Saban team to even a Notre Dame or other fringe top 10 team. Saban sends droves of players into the NFL draft's early rounds. And because of the development of conference sports networks, the rich keep on getting richer and that strengthens the status quo.

There's no way an expanded CFP format could ever fix that.

This was one of the greatest college football seasons in recent memory. Fans and teams were happy to be back from missing last season due to COVID, insane NIL deals to start season, transfer players and super seniors, upsets all over the place, every week ranked teams were falling, conference re-alignment madness, endless CFP expansion discussions, coaches getting fired and poached and all the intrigue/drama that goes on with that. A G5 team made the playoffs for the first time ever, and a team that started the season unranked also made the playoffs (odds of making it at season start was 2%) which was also a first. The only thing that would have made it better is if Alabama got knocked out of the playoffs but Auburn, Georgia and OK state couldn't quite make it happen. Hopefully Cinnci can do it.

yeah but the game is still horribly slow, takes for fricking ever to finish, and you've got like, ~3 maybe 4 serious athletes on any top-tier team. ...6 if you're Alabama.

I still watch my team for the most part, but I do find a lot of college football obnoxious to watch now. Also...it's just an incredibly ugly franchise considering the value proposition of what these ADs are to the Academic institutions that they are attached to (it's actually Zero, in the end)
 
I find it extremely tough to get excited about CFG's anymore sorry.

And the reasons most games are not very interesting is the NCAA's problem not mine.
