It has to do with the static electricity that can be generated from the case generally around someone's cell phone, not the phone itself (but there is a possibility of battery discharge as well).

dude the static generated getting out of the car if you have cloth seats is infinitly more likly to start a fire and even then its still infintesimaly small

Pssst...genius...clothes + cell phone case = possibility for static..and unless you take your seat out of the car with you, you'd be hard pressed to use that as an 'infinitely more likely' situation.

Although MythBusters is a form of entertainment they have a point and at least some evidence to backup the bust. The manufacture would of course always advise in causion as it is their ass if anything happens. If you seriously think a cell phone can create a gas station fire, you are an idiot.

danny~!

Do I think a modern cell phone would cause a fire? Highly unlikely.

Trust me, I mostly agree with you guys (that it's extraordinarily unlikely) but you have no right to deride those who elect to abide by cell phone manufacturers warnings (and gas station owner mandates).

Bottom line is it's up to the gas station. It's their property, they can set the rules. We are in no position to make that decision, the property simply doesn't belong to us.

Oh one more thing, trying to defend MythBusters as a valid source is asinine. They can be somewhat entertaining but they are by no means an authority - Particularly in cases like this where it's "unlikely, but..."

the only reason the cell phone makers put this in the manual is for liability

it costs them nothing to put the warning in the manual, but if it ever did actually happen (another proof that it hasn't, if someone got blown up, they would have sued for millions of $) , they would be liable for big $

so it can't happen, the cell phone makers are just feeding the myth to cover their butts, not because they think it can happen

Agreed....I'd rather not risk ANY chance at all of me catching fire while pumping gas. Is it so hard to not smoke or get off your phone while pumping gas? Of course it isn't likely to happen. I've built a damn computer while wearing socks and working on carpet and haven't done any damage (i don't make it practice to do this though). If you have to smoke while you are pumping flammable liquids or talk on the phone then......:disgust:. i don't care how unlikely that it is, like I said, sh1t happens.

Because cell phones catching fire is unheard of...

I'm just playing devil's advocate here...I don't give it a second thought if I pull my phone out at a gas station. I'm also one of those people who leave their engines running when fueling up...haven't blown a car up yet.

I remember watching some video here a few years ago that someone posted. It was this lady getting out of her passat or something talking on the cell phone and when she was pumping the gasoline ignited.

Sh1t happens. Why risk it on something so stupid.

With that mentality, you shouldn't be parking your car next to a gas pump, think about all of the sparking and heat they generate.

Do you get to take anything with you inside that protective bubble of yours?

Wearing a sweater and fuzzy slippers probably was the cause, not the cell phone.

Right, since there is warnings that say "Don't park next to the gas pumps!!!"

Funny how people can be scared sh1tless of little spiders and it be okay but bad if I feel uncomfortable about having something lit up while handling a hose to dispense gasoline.

that was static electricity

womans do this all the time for some reason, they get out, start filling and then get back in the car. their weird fabric clothes get a static charge and the blow up when they get out to put the nozzle back

NEWSFLASH!

The phone's RF can cause the pump's meter to malfunction causing a billing error which means you can get free or substantially reduced gas. Filling stations don't like this so they print up the labels to scare people.

You're a million times more likely to get in a car accident and die on your way to the gas station than you are to start a fire with your cell phone. Want to err on the side of caution? Don't drive.

Also: do you have stairs in your house, Amp?

While MythBusters is certainly not "scientific" in their testing, they do provide useful feedback on some retarded myths, including this one. If you feel that no one has the right to deride others for listening to cell phone manufacturers, what gives you the right to deride those who listen to MythBusters?

It's the getting into and getting out of cars that starts the fires. Most people who talk on cell phones alot seem to do this alot. Most people who don't, don't. Seriously, it takes two minutes to pump gas. If you need something to do, wash your windows and check your oil.

oh man, I SO agree with you on that one.

Toss this in with the absurd ban on cell phones in airplanes because we all know when you hear the custom ring tone of Jay-Z you are a precious few seconds from the plane exploding, falling out of the sky, or zooming into the future!

And btw I have had idiots yell at me because I was on the phone at a gas station.

Anyone else find the idea of a cell phone exploding in someone's face funny?
