Seen this before?

Well it's bullsht, cell phones don't start fires at gas stations. "What's the big deal Amp, everyone knows it's a myth" Wrong! People actually believe this! Check out this post an '06 made today.

....Many times as I pull into a gas station, I see a bunch of idiots either still on their cell phone....

Yes mr poster, what a bunch of idiots. Do me a favor, if you believe that a spark from a cellphone will cause a fire at a gas station, try to argue that point in this thread. Just don't be surprised if we don't debate you point by point and just make fun of you.

IMO, that's a lot of what's wrong with ATOT today.

It has to do with the static electricity that can be generated from the case generally around someone's cell phone, not the phone itself (but there is a possibility of battery discharge as well).

please, no teaching, I called all these people out so we could make fun of them.

Of course cellphones can start fires. I use mine to light cigarettes.

Mythbusters tested this one, and found that a cell phone can not start a fire at the gas pump. They even increased the gas vapors to many times more than what you would ever experiance at a gas pump, and still nothing. Now the moron with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth, that guy you should worry about.

Nope they busted that one too. They found that while a cigarette can reach the necessary temp to ignite gasoline when they puffed on it, the temps dropped too low to light gas anything when it was just burning. They couldn't get one to actually start a fire. Even when just tossing the cig in a pool of gas.

yep, I saw that episode. Sh1t, they put the phone in an enclosure, increase the gas vapors to like 10x what a person would be exposed to at a gas station and NADA! So, yeah, cellphones won't do nuttin...

I'm much more inclined to err on the side of caution (at the advice of cell phone manufacturers) than to listen to any moron who thinks MythBusters is valid proof of anything.

Static electricity can start a fire, there was a video of a guy refueling his ferrari in Washington, and the vapors from his gas tank ignited when he got close to the metal. This was on the news.... burned the whole back side panel of his car

LOL. In Belgium, the pump that my mom frequents, there is a sign that say no smoking, and no mobiles.

😕

Personally, I'd rather be safer than sorry, and not want to find out if it really happens, but whatever floats your boats.

There are many potential sources of static. E.g. Certain types of interior upholstery. Should cars with non-leather seats be banned? 😛 😀

Not only do cell phones cause brain cancer, and cause accidents, but they cause gas station fires. DAMN THEM

You forgot impotence due to their proximity to the reproductive organs (when belt worn).

Although MythBusters is a form of entertainment they have a point and at least some evidence to backup the bust. The manufacture would of course always advise in causion as it is their ass if anything happens. If you seriously think a cell phone can create a gas station fire, you are an idiot.

danny~!
