cellphone haters, question for you

I hate them so much. The people that use them always hava a look on their face like they are important or something. If I had a business I wouldn't allow people to have cell phones, and I would kick them out if I saw they had one, even if they already paid(movie theater, etc).

I don't get that. I know I dealt with emergencies just fine when I was 16 without a cell phone. Nobody had cell phones then.

It's just a nice convenience. It's a nice feeling to know that when my beater broke down by the side of the road, I wasn't going to have to foot it xxx number of miles alone in the dark to call for help.

I don't like people who are rude about it leaving their ringer on and being loud and obnoxious, but I don't care if someone is walking down the street talking. I don't like obnoxious people. Doens't matter if they are on the phone or not...the phone is irrelevant.

hehe i live in LA and i'm like the only person I know who doesn't have one. Even my 14 year old cousin has her own cell phone!

It does get annoying. sometimes I'll be out with my friends (who all have cell phones) and one by one they'll each get a call and will gab away on the phone (all while we're out eating/shopping or whatever) and i'm just sitting there like doo do dodooo with nobody to talk to.

another time i went out on a "date" with this guy. (date is in quotations cuz i didn't know it was even a date until after the fact hehe) and we went to go see a movie and the guy's cell phone rings and he has a freaking conversation in the movie theater. i was so appalled and embarassed. needless to say, there was no 2nd "date" hehe.

personally, i don't own a cell phone cuz i hate carrying stuff like that around and i hate talking on the phone. plus, i'm just not that important or popular hehe.

Agreed. I was out with a girl over the summer and we were eating at the Olive Garden. Before the food came I got a phone call and I had the volume of the ringer all the way up for some reason, so it starts blasting the Mario Brother's theme song. Needless to say I was embarassed, but it was a client, so she was actually impressed and not pissed off. I was mouthing 'I'm so sorry...' while my client was talking...I felt like a jackass. I couldn't believe I forgot to turn off the ringer.

If that's really the reason to have the phone, then get one without a contract and keep it in the car. It can still be used to dial 911 in an emergency, it just can't be used for anything else. And it's a hell of a lot cheaper way to get peace of mind for those emergencies.

ditto. I try and hit the END button so it would stop ringing as soon as I can... even while it's still buckled to my belt. Then I unclip it and hit TALK.

I think it's perfectly fine people have and use cellphones, so long as they don't use it to have a 10-minute casual conversations on it - unless they're sitting at home using the free long distance minutes.

We're not just talking about "emergencies." You don't always need to call 911. You shouldn't call 911 when you run out of gas, or when your engine suddenly dies on the highway. What good is a phone that can only call 911, then? You expect me to call 911 because my car is broken down?

Oh yeah, and $40 is just soooooooooo much to pay. I might add that I have no landline, so that $40 is ALL I pay for ANY communications. Cripes, you can get really basic service for like $10/month if it's that important to you to never actually use it...you won't have enough minutes to make it worth your while, but you'll have enough to make an emergency call.

I just spent a random hour wandering around the residential streets of my area, talking the whole time on the phone to Zenmervolt, on a hands-free set. The few people I passed looked at me kind of weird, this girl walking down the street and talking to herself.

I don't hold conversations on the phone anytime I'm around people other than a short, "okay, I'll pick you up at 6", I keep it turned off in class or anywhere it's likely to disturb.

Graeme - how about being able to reach someone at any time because they have a cell phone? I call my teammates up for change of gametimes or if we're missing players to have them grab another guy to show up... Instead of them giving me their work AND home number, I get their cell number where I can reach them any time of the day so long as they let me. See any practical use in similar situations? They have cell phones because they WANT to be notified of things should it impact their schedules. It doesn't mean they're any more important or cooler than you are. It means they WANT to be reached. Those who don't and still carry cell phones... simply keep them off until they need it.

Anything wrong with that ? I know the statistic on "daily itinerary" use of cell phones is not 90%. You know it's 90% ?

Get with the new century and get a cellphone. If you say you dont need one, then go make friends or meet girls that want to talk to you. Then you'll get one and answer it where ever you damn please. B/c a possible "booty call" is more important than pleasing strangers.

I feel for you with the annoying rings that people have, and that they never put it on silent when they are in a silent situation. But as far as just talking......it the same thing as if i was talking to my friend who is standing next to me. I guess people feel funny seeing or being the person talking with no one near them.

What I hate are the people who feel it's just absolutely necessary to jabber away on their cell phones while they're attempting (and sometimes failing miserably) to drive a car.

That's dangerous.


And something that just plain disgusts me are the women (and men too...) who go grocery shopping, or just plain shopping, pushing their shopping cart around, absently grabbing stuff off the shelf while they're blabbering away on their d*mn cell phones, oblivious to everything and everyone around them.....

What, can't wait till you get home huh?


Cell phones have their uses. But it just seems to me like people are using cell phones more than interacting with people around them. It's like everyone is building isolation booths around themselves, and SCREW the rest of humanity.

i think it's funny that people think that if they have a phone with them they HAVE to answer it. like they're driving and it rings, and it's like, OMG, i HAVE to find the phone before it stops ringing. or in class, they answer to say, "i'm in class and can't talk right now." if you can't talk, don't answer morons.

Well, if you haven't, it's a bunch of skits where they screw with people in public. (Nothing mean, just to annoy them.) And this one dude always lets his phone ring, then picks up this MASSIVE phone they made, and he just walks around and screams on it really loud. At movie theaters, shows, whatever. It's HILARIOUS. It's on Comedy Central if you haven't seen it. (I think it's on tonite also.)

Anyways, yeah, one thing I never understood is why people get annoyed when someone is on the phone in a public place, as opposed to talking to someone. But I TOTALLY agree with turning your phone on silent in certain places. (Move Theatres, etc.) I ALWAYS turn it on "vibrate" whenever I go anywhere in public like the mall, restaurants, stores, etc. I DO wish more people did that at least.

Cell phones are useful in some situations, but too many people think they are ABSOLUTELY essential for every day living, which is not even remotely the case. As is mentioned above, it seems many people have an inflated sense of worth if they can whip out their cell phone and make a call in public or, similarly, take an incoming call in public. I used to carry a phone, and it came in handy when I was caught in traffic and needed to tell my wife that I was going to be a little later than normal or when she needed to ask me to pick something up for dinner on the way home.

I don't carry one now, but I may break down and get one because it's a pain in the @ss to call my wife at home when I cannot access an off-base phone line from most on-base phones (stationed in Japan, we live off-base). Otherwise, I wouldn't bother and would save my money.
