what's the difference between someone talking on their phone, and talking to someone else with them in person? I read an opinion piece in the chicago tribune today that admonished cellphone talkers for not "looking around" to see if anyone was annoyed. Are we supposed to do that whenever we have a conversation in real life with someone in public? What's the difference here?

and if you say people on the phone are louder...look around and see how many loud and annoying people you come across that's aren't on a cell phone each day. I talk at a normal level anyways. :)

because many people YELL into their phones.....I think that is the difference. If 2 people were standing around yelling at each other, you'd notice as well. you've already stated this so you understand. people who are loud and obnoxious get stared at as well. i talk quietly so I don't give a fvck what anybody says.....heh

Everyone and their moms have cellphones. IT IS SO FRIGGIN ANNOYING. Just last week I saw these little 7-9 year old girls talking on their cell phones. Each one of them had one. I mean CMON? Why do you need a cell phone when you are that young? I believe cellphones should be used for emergencies and business related things. Not to glue the phone to your ear and blabber from the time you leave your house and the time you get back.

I feel like a moron every time I have to answer my cell phone in public. I try to find someplace out of the way to talk.

What annoys me the most are the people that continue to let the phone ring while they check the caller id. Just press a button so the thing stops ringing, then check the CID. I also feel that anyone that does this while in class should fail the class immediately.

Just the other day a girl in my Biochem class actually answered the phone in the middle of lecture and carried on a five minute conversation.

I personally have a cell phone (work phone) which is always on vibrate. As HappyPuppy does, I too leave a crowd to answer the phone.

I'm 16, and I have a cell phone mostly for emergencies especially now that I drive a car. As well I use it on the weekends when I'm out so I can make plans with other people, but I do agree that using it around other people is sorta rude.

why does it annoy you any more than someone talking to a person next to them?

Maybe it's because so many people are bad at it.

I don't care what you do in your car if you can maintain control of it. People with cellphones seem to be the bulk of the people cutting me off.

So true, I was at a Chinese restaurant two nights ago with a few friends of mine. We sat down and were talking and I looked over and there was a ten year old girl talking on a cell phone with her father across the table. What kind of parent lets their kids have cell phones at 10?! *sigh*

I think the difference is that some cellphone talkers, once they get on the phone, think that turning away from people will keep their conversation private, or some magical barrier suddenly surrounds them that prevents sound from passing through! That and people talking face to face are looking at each other, presumably each being interested in what the other person is saying and voluntarily "tune in" when being spoken to.

I was at this small Italian place for dinner the other night and the place was pretty empty except for me and a friend seated by the door, and this group of four on the other side of the restaurant. So one of the girl's phone rings, does the "greet and gauge length of conversation" routine then stands up and moves towards the door. But somehow, she never makes it towards the door. WTF?!? Apparently keeping her back towards her friends was enough consideration given to them, all the while facing my table. It gets hard to ignore a person when someone is so close, facing you, and speaking out. Com'on, the door was three feet away... just a little more and she would've made it! :(

And the conversation was about how some scummy guy she hooked up with the week before wouldn't leave her alone and left all of these explicit messages.

Now it doesn't bother me much when a phone rings where people gather (except a movie theater) since some of those vibrating phones have a pretty weak vibration, but have the courtesy to take the conversation outside or at the very least, away and not facing others.

Yeah. If they're annoying, they're annoying. Doesn't matter if they're on the phone or gabbing with their friend right there.

I don't get that. I know I dealt with emergencies just fine when I was 16 without a cell phone. Nobody had cell phones then.

This reminds me of that show "Trigger Happy". Anyone seen this?

Well, if you haven't, it's a bunch of skits where they screw with people in public. (Nothing mean, just to annoy them.) And this one dude always lets his phone ring, then picks up this MASSIVE phone they made, and he just walks around and screams on it really loud. At movie theaters, shows, whatever. It's HILARIOUS. It's on Comedy Central if you haven't seen it. (I think it's on tonite also.)

Anyways, yeah, one thing I never understood is why people get annoyed when someone is on the phone in a public place, as opposed to talking to someone. But I TOTALLY agree with turning your phone on silent in certain places. (Move Theatres, etc.) I ALWAYS turn it on "vibrate" whenever I go anywhere in public like the mall, restaurants, stores, etc. I DO wish more people did that at least.

I thought I could cure my hatred for cell phones by not buying one, but now I find I'm jealous of everybody that did.

I don't really mind people talking on them, unless it's in a place like the movies or class or whatever. I was taking a test (final exam, maybe, I can't remember) and some guy's phone rung and he proceeded to answer and tell the person who called "I'm taking a test, I can't talk." Apparently the other guy couldn't comprehend what he was saying, because he had to repeat himself several times. What's so hard about turning it off before class starts? Or just hitting the power button if you do forget to turn it off? In my technical writing class, people are kicked out of class for the day (failing someone is a bit extreme for an honest mistake, I think) if their phone rings during class. No one's phone has rung during class. One of the few classes I've had where it's not happened.

I guess living in LA desensitizes you to that. You're an outcast if you DON'T have a cellphone. I mean, someone comes up to you and asks if they can borrow a quarter to make a phone call.. it's like WTF, do you at least have running water in your house??
