I'll agree that many people will live a long life without using mathematics, but the number of people who make poor decisions as a result of being innumerate is amazing. Look at all the foolish financial decisions that are made. I would definitely agree that a sound understanding of statistics is far more useful than calculus, however people (including legislators) make decisions constantly that aren't born out by the mathematics.

If she's over the age of 8 and a U.S. citizen, yes it does.

Depends on how many pennies, nickels, dimes, and dollar bills there are!

Absolutely pathetic, isn't it? Maybe that's why all universities should require calculus as a part of all majors. That way, they can limit the amount of alumni who are perceived as stupid.

In my 25 years, I have never needed calculus, nor do I ever anticipate that it would ever be useful (for me). Elementary math, on the other hand...

It would weed out people who can't reason and think.

Honestly people, doesn't stuff like this smack your frontal lobe and get you to pause for a second?

I for instance with 2 Engineering degrees and quiet the history of ass busting work and I might JUST might MAYBE one day as in MAYBE in the deep DEEP future if God is smiling down upon me and the planets get aligned again and if all the galaxies in the Universe align as well, just might MAYBE reach the 6 figures income mark, while she can't figure out that

[ (3/4) x 10] = 7.5 = (5 x 1.50) ]

And she is in an income figure mark that she can't count (most probably)?

F THIS!

Her skillset is more valuable and rare

sucks doesn't it? air head tards can sing/dance/light themselves on fire to fame and money.

same here, regardless of your previous time spent in front of large groups. it happens, she recovered nicely and i was amused by the whole deal. ive made simple mistakes like that as well, not going to condemn her for the same thing.

It'll probably never be useful for you only because you probably weren't good enough at it, nor did you really get into a lot of applications with it. Hell, I've used calculus to help me with cooking.
Ok, I've got to hear about that.

I would love to know how calculus, and not just basic arithmetic, helped you cook something. Did you derive a new ingredient from two unknown ingredients?

Maybe he calculated the area underneath a lasagna noodle to figure out how much ricotta cheese he needed.

thats easy. 9X16 pan youll need about 32oz for a 3 layer lasagne. most recipes call for 24 oz but they are wrong. thats not enough.

being in front of a camera or live audience with an assumed persona and a script is much easier to handle and accomplish than getting up there as yourself, being "exposed" and basically unscripted. how well do you perform outside your "norm"

Idiots on here are making way too big of a deal out of this. She panicked at first, once she collected her nerves she did alright. She admitted she's not very good in math, I'm sure she excels at other things. But no need to kick dirt in her face because she doesn't know EVERYTHING like the typical ATOTer does.I'm fairly sure every person on here would easily answer every question on that show without using a single life line and walk away with a million bucks.

Too bad a million bucks is chump change to the ATOTer who's worth 100 times that.

Since when do you need to be smart to do Calculus?

She's a script actor, she'd probably clinch up on a "who's line is it any ways?" type show too.her comfort zone is sitting in a trailer memorizing lines, not being put on the spot. I still think once she calmed down she did fairly well. I suck at math too, and how she worked it out at the end is about what I would have done. she was doing division in her head semi out loud, that's what I do lol.

All I am trying to say is that it's really REALLY PATHETIC when one gets insights like this about who are those who get the top dollars in this country. That's ALL I am saying.

Sure someone might spring up and say "NO NO if you want top dollars you should do bla bla bla..."

I know what idiots do these days to get top dollars, all .I am just saying it's pathetic and ridiculous at the end once one gets to see more and more parts of the big picture.

TFEH!

I can see the other side. She panicked. She froze up when stressed in front of a TV and the other posts in the thread. I'm curious, though, if the reaction is partly from that she's overall a likable and familiar person. Would your response have been the same if the same thing happened to a person that many people dislike? (Suspend disbelief for a bit.) Such as:

George W. Bush?
Dick Cheney?
Paris Hilton?
Michael Vick?
Bernie Madoff?
Bill Gates/Steve Ballmer?
A-Rod/Barry Bonds?

And so on. Okay, clearly, I'm terrible with coming up with disliked people and you're free to insert your own name(s) but you get the drift.
