CDRW problems

My Creative 4224E writer now says it burns cds properly, but when I try and read the CD is says drive is not accesable (on different systems). Also, when I put a RW in, my computer like freezes untill I take it back out. anyone got help or had the same problem??

how do you have your IDE cables connected?, as in which drive is the slave to the hard drive?If you have a cd-rom and cd burner the burner must be the slave to the hard drive in order to work correctly,thus leaving the cd-rom as the secondary master....hope this helps

I have the same drive and just recently i started getting lock-ups when trying to read cdrw's like you described. I wish i had a remedy for it because it's very frustrating. I'm gonna try what Massmhz suggested maybe that'll help..

Thanks, but it IS the slave drive. I did nothing to provoke it to stop working!

I don?t thing that it is a good idea to put the HD and the CD burner on the same IDE channel. Two components on the same IDE slows down the channel, slowing down helps to generate coasters.

A Better arrangement will be. HD IDE 1 master. CDROM drive Slave to HD1

CDR-writer Master on IDE2.

Try to read a commercial CD on your Creative 4224E writer.

If it is reading normally a CD that was burned elsewhere then your connections are OK.

If the connection is OK, and it reads but does not write, check the ASPI layers.

I had the same exact problem (except for the RW part). I was able to fix it by cleaning the drive. I mean REALLY cleaning the drive (not using a "cleaning CD&quot. I took the drive apart and used a Q-tip to clean off the lense. You have to be very careful because the lense is not held on by much. I had to do it twice before I got it working properly but it did work in the end. Good luck.

Ok. I have checked my ASPI Layers. They are fine. What should I do now? any way to fix without open and cleaning lens?

I'm not exactly sure of the particular nature of your problem. Do you mean that your burner worked fine before and all of a sudden it doesn't read burned discs anymore? If that's the case then you should check what you've done to your setup - hardware installs, software installs, driver issues etc.

Have you checked to see if your IDE drivers are working correctly? I had a weird problem with my Plex that was fixed by doing a IDE driver update. It's possible that your IDE driver is corrupted and/or your burner doesn't like it anymore and that's why it's exhibiting it's behavior.

If it's not a media problem or your burner dying a slow and painful death (how old is your burner anyways?) then i'd remove your burner and the reinstall it and see what happens both physically (making sure that all your connections are solid) and through system properties. If that doesn't work then i'd remove your IDE channel and then reboot and let it redetect it again. If that doesn't work then certainly look for BIOS and/or IDE Channel upgrades. Then firmware upgrades. Then check to see if your burning software is buggy for any reason.
