"Public health officials are considering promoting routine circumcision for all baby boys born in the United States to reduce the spread of H.I.V., the virus that causes AIDS."

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08...cumcision.html?_r=2&hp

It will be interesting as to what the first official draft at the end of the year says. Personally I dont mind being circumsized, but I really think it should be up to the parents.

Psychologically, this is clearly a 2nd Amendment issue.

Promoting, not mandating.

Reducing the odds of acquiring HIV is not the only benefit; IIRC, circumcised men have a significantly lower risk of penile cancer as well...

"Critics say it subjects baby boys to medically unnecessary surgery without their consent.

But Dr. Peter Kilmarx, chief of epidemiology for the division of H.I.V./AIDS prevention at the C.D.C., said that any step that could thwart the spread of H.I.V. must be given serious consideration."

To prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS, don't fund comprehensive sex education; instead, circumcise baby boys.

It seems like it would be less invasive to spend a few more minutes on condoms during Sex Ed than to pay for all of that surgery.

The government is actually considering cutting off part of baby's penises. That is exactly what the NY Times article is saying.

Well, in all fairness, this cant be construed as an Obama / UHC thing. At all. Its simply as it says - a recommendation from CDC, not the WH

Question: IF they show the incidence in certain cancers and HIV is reduced due to circumcision, what is the problem in recommending it?

The government is considering recommending that parents seriously consider their newborn boys having a medical procedure that 65% currently receive.

Nice spin though, OC

Come on guys, I'm not for pignapoke healthcare but the proceedure is safe and it will be suggested not mandated. This helps lessen the risk of AIDS. It's not snake oil.

As far as a babies consent goes this is a parental decision. We should halt all health care until the child reaches the age of majority? That's silly.

This sounds like a bad idea. I understand that health professionals dedicated to trying to reduce AIDS have one mindset, but I don't agree with their weighing of the issues.

There are other ways to attack AIDS.

I don't object to their making the information about the health benefits available to parents to make the choice, but I object soon past that point as the advocacy increases.

It's part of the effort to reduce health care costs. The only pay practitioners will get is the tips.

And here I thought that it was just a form of religious ritualistic mutilation. I need to stop reading ATOT flame wars so much.

Are there not simpler and more effective ways to lessen the risk of AIDS? I mean, short of cutting on people's genitalia? This is really a barbaric practice and things like soap and condoms make it just a bit outdated.
