Smoking outside is just asking for trouble...
Anyone who has actually been around the beautiful aroma of marijuana would know why.

Ask him not to smoke indoors, it stinks and is against rules you've agreed to. Don't concern yourself with what he does outdoors, as long as he fulfills his obligation to you (pays rent).
That hands off approach will still get you convicted since you have knowledge of his activities.
We're talking about a small personal amount of marijuana, not murder.

A crime is a crime.
Rules are rules. I'm sure the guy can find a way. I always managed and I used to smoke the stuff like my life depended on it.Originally posted by: Nutdotnet

Posession of a small amount is a violation, not even a misdemeanor. It's on par with getting a no-points traffic ticket and a $50 fine. What would aiding and abetting get you, a dirty look?Originally posted by: chambersc

How insightful....
Too bad it doesn't apply to the subject at hand.

Sounds like you're your parents' b!tch, sucky place to be. Any possibility of moving out?Originally posted by: SithSolo1
I would have replied sooner but my internet has been down all day.
I just want to set a few things straight.
First of all I'm not going to say I'm not spoiled(I am) or that I'm not a tool(probably am).
I don't like pot.
I have asked him on multiple occasions not to smoke here period. He'd stop for a week and then start back up.
My parents control my life. They own the condo we are staying in and they own my car. They've already taken my car for a week once because they caught him smoking cigarettes on the porch with the door open. If they ever found out he was smoking pot I'd lose the car and a place to live. My father has made it very clear that I am the one responsible for everything that goes on there. They won't punish him but they will punish me. They also live 5mins away and have their own key.
Being a condo we are surround by neighbors. Half of which are college students who's parents bought them condos, the other half, which mainly live on the floor above us, are 50+. These are also not cheap, we are talking upwards of $250K+ each. His $600 is paying for about 1/4 of what the total rent/utlites are. He never signed a lease, we never made a contract. Basicly he is a paying guest.
When he smokes outside he usually invites 4-7 other people over to smoke with him. Then they all end up watching TV till 5am and crashing on my furniture(which has pissed my parents off to no end). All of it is mine, the sofas, home theater(yes, I paid for it), the only thing he brought was a bed and a desk.
He is not dealing to my knowledge but he has had up to an ounce here before. But he does hand out his key when I'm not around and he's at work so that his friends can come smoke
I DID NOT UNLOCK his door. I unlocked the front door so I could get in the condo and his door is the first one in and about 4 feet away. It was also wide open and looking into his wide open closet where I saw him(front the front door) walk over and put his bong in it and then shut the closet. He then invited me into his room to talk about the iPhone. Also his room has two windows, neither of them open.
We were best friends until about halfway through high school when we went to different schools. His mother and my mother are really close thus they offered him a place to stay when living with his dad wasn't working out.
I'm going to talk to him this weekend and set some new rules.
No smoking anything, anywhere.
No one spends the night here unless they do so in his room.
Limiting him to 3 guest at any given time.

I really don't see the big woop if he's smoking in his OWN room. Being messy, leaving dirty dishes pile up in teh sink, eating your food, playing really loud music late at night, having obnoxious guests over all the time etc. These are things that would bother me. But smoking a little weed in his own room? I don't see how that really bothers you, especially since you have to break into his room just to find out about it. If he pays his rent on time, and smoking a little weed is your only complaint - I'd say you've got a pretty good roommate.
But just show him your thread here and he'll prolly WANT to move away from you.
Fern
Are you aware that if you're in school and are convicted for a drug-related offense that you become no longer eligible for using the FAFSA? (ie, Federal Grants and Loans).
That would be a pretty ****** thing to happen to someone who doesn't smoke and can easily avoid it.
Finally a man with sense, thank you!!
Yeah well if you want to be paranoid about every little thing that could possibly screw you over then you must be higher than most pot heads.

I personally wouldnt want pot or someone who smoked pot at my residence. He'll more likely hang around with people who could potentially steal your stuff. Also despite whoevers opinion it is illegal so you could feasibily have cops busting down your door at any moment.
Also from first hand experience pot can become a problem in your life fast. Maybe if you do it once a month on your 'relax' day but too often it becomes the center of peoples lives and leads them the wrong direction.
WTF? I am very curious to know how old you are.
Umm sicne when did pot smokers get lumped in with common thieves???
You do know that pot is the "green" stuff that you smoke right??? I think you may have it confused with some other drug like Cocaine or H.
I used to smoke pot when I was in college. I didnt hang around with theives. I know and hang out with LOTS of people that smoke pot today. I dont steal.

You should start an "intervention." Marijuana is a gateway drug. Get about ten people together to meet with him one evening. Have it be a surprise, focus on the dangers of marijuana and why it's ruining his life.
Get him into a rehab program and he's set.
That's my thinking. I couldn't care less about people who smoke pot. IMO it should be legalized and controlled similar to alcohol. However, the guy is smoking inside the condo - his parents condo. It's not his room, he's renting and he's supposed to follow the rules of the lease. The OP isn't being a tool or idiot, his roommate is.Originally posted by: Aquaman

As a Canadian I find the American treatment of pot rather bizarre. I rather have a pot smoker live in my place than a drinker or cigarette smoker.
Depends what you think is the negatives of his smoking pot on your property, I suppose? It is your property and so your rules are the ones he should follow, but I think you're really blowing things out of proportion. What's the worst that could happen if he continued?
For me as a landlord........ it's not the pot smoking..... he can smoke outside. But the smokin g inside really would tee me off. It's relly hard if not impossible to get the smoke smell out (funk febreeze). Just keep that sh!t outside.
Cheers,
Aquaman
