I just thought I would post this in here in case others here have been having problems in games and possibly not even realizing that:
a: It's even happening to begin with
b: Catalyst AI is the root of the problem.
In UT2004 on older drivers I traditionally had a problem with V-sync not working, dispite the fact that I had the option enabled both in-game and in my drivers.
Recently I installed the new 6.2 Catalysts and I noticed right away that AA was not working AT ALL in UT2004. I know that others have posted that the X1900XT's AA "doesn't work". What I think is happening is that Catalyst AI is somehow disabling AA if it doesn't think that a game will perform well with it enabled, or else it's just a glitch.
In any event, disabling Catalyst AI in my drivers made AA work again, PLUS the textures looked much sharper, more vibrant, and higher quality than they were previously. I will try to post some screenshots of the phemonenon later.
I have no problem with optimizations if there is no image quality loss. It seems as though ATI has taken things too far in some cases though. I know that in HL2 they apparently have been programming the drivers to "not render" certain elements. Not cool.
