The lid was shut but the shower was open and there was some standing water in there for at least a day or so that she could have lapped up.

Both our cats locked themselves in a bedroom for 4 days or so... closet door was open, they jumped on a suitcase in the closet, the suitcase fell and shut the bedroom door while they were inside. The bathroom off of that bedroom is where their litter boxes are, so that was good at least, but they didn't have food.

We just leave all the doors open...And if we're gone more than 2 days we have a friend go into the house and check on them.

Poor kitteh I'm glad she's okay though! :)

I have two cats. One of which LOVES to push doors shut. For that reason, all doors in the house are propped open at all times. I don't understand a loving pet owner leaving for 5 days and not doing a visual check on your cats right before you walked out. But oh well, doesn't sound like much harm was done.

1. double check the cats have access to food/watter/litterbox
2. keep all doors wedged open so it doesn't happen again
3. give someone keys so they can actually go in and check on the cats
4. trade cats in for cactii

btw, where did the cat poop and pee?

QFT, not everyone is meant to have pets.

Hire a fucking pet sitter next time. I believe leaving an animal confined and unattended is illegal in many states regardless if water and food are just thrown out.

:disgust:

Who pissed in your bowl of cheerios, old man?

You'd think that would be the case, but the truth is, cats don't tolerate not eating very well. They can suffer severe liver damage after just a few days without food. When outside a cat can, and will, find a way to eat when it needs to.

Also, the liver problems cats can get from starving actually happen more quickly to fat cats than thin cats, so you got pretty lucky, OP.

Ugh, the cat pee smell must be killer in your room now.

Was on a bathroom mat/rug and towel.

Already washed it and mopped up the tile beneath it.

Odor is long gone now.

Happened to me once, over a thanksgiving weekend. 5 days. Cat was fine, but I felt pretty bad about it.

wouldn't you say goodbye to your pet before you step out the front door? I guess cats just aren't as personable... but I think we knew that.

Some years ago a friend of mine had a dog. They went on vacation and he had his brother come by once or twice a day to attend to it. However, the dog was tied up outside in hot weather and the chain became tangled in something, preventing the dog from reaching shade/water. It was trapped in the hot sun all day and later ending up dying of complications resulting from heat stroke/dehydration. He felt horrible about that. :(

my cat escaped one summer and got locked in a neighbors garage for a month (literally, it was 30 days). the vet said she had no idea how the cat survived that long; said she must have found a leak to drink water from when it rained and ate bugs/small things that she could find.

after a trip to the vet and some TLC she was fine, and lived to be 16 (was about 7 at time of incident).

seriously tho, why did you close your doors anyway? worried someone was going to walk in on you not having sex while you were not in the house?

Happened to mine once. I go a week at a time and just leave them. But I did learn to close all doors and prop open ones where they could shut themselves in.

I had something similar happen to my cat. He went missing for a few days and then came in late one night and looked really bad. After a trip to the vet it looked like he must have been locked in somewhere. The real danger is not getting them to eat or drink afterword because it can lead to a disease called fatty liver. Its not the end of the world but is a chronic illness that requires a special diet and extra care.

How personable cats are depends on a lot on the owners.

My parents' cat welcomes them when they get home and paws goodbye when they are leaving home :)

Thanks for the laugh.

Yeah just like it's fine to leave a 4 year old home...same difference. If they get in trouble they cannot get help.

My cat is in the hospital right now, it somehow developed struvite crystals which blocked in from urinating basically instantly. The cat went from happy cat to freaking out/dying cat in a matter of moments.

12 hours later the cat would have been dead.

I am responsible, that's one of my kind

I always suspected you were a lower life form.
