The company manufactures heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems at its plant located on West Morris Street.

Chris Nelson, president of HVAC Systems and Services North American, issued the following statement:

“This move is intended to address the challenges we continue to face in a rapidly changing HVAC industry, with the continued migration of the HVAC industry to Mexico, including our suppliers and competitors, and ongoing cost and pricing pressures driven, in part, by new regulatory requirements.

“Relocating our operations to a region where we have existing infrastructure and a strong supplier base will allow us to operate more cost effectively so that we can continue to produce high-quality HVAC products that are competitively positioned while continuing to meet customer needs.

“This decision is difficult and we recognize the impact on employees, their families and the community. We are committed to ensuring that our employees are treated respectfully and to working closely with their representatives throughout this transition.”

Mayor Joe Hogsett releases this statement on Carrier’s announcement:

“Today’s surprise announcement was without warning and incredibly disappointing. While I am obviously concerned about the economic impact, my top priority is the well-being of the hardworking families affected by this decision.

A job lost in any part of our community affects us all, and I believe these are the times we must come together as one city to lift up our neighbors. That is why this afternoon I will issue an Executive Order to create a task force that will convene local, state, and federal resources and direct every tool at our disposal toward supporting these workers in the days ahead.”

Update: It's 2,100 jobs. They are closing a facility in northern Indiana as well that employs 700.

Also came out that Carrier got $530,000 in tax dollars for employee training.

Trump says he will tax Carrier 35% for every Air Conditioner they ship to the U.S.

When one competitor in the industry decides to offshore jobs to save a buck they all have to or be undercut on the price of the product at retail.

ETA: It's already hard enough to find good Reliable HVAC systems.

ETA #2 And for some reason in the last 8 years or so they went from $3,200. to $6,000. or More per Unit.
Usually a lot More $$$

Replaced heating unit this year, so just did all sorts of reading on this.

Lennox already did this, and I did not buy it. No me gusta hecho en Mexico para mi casa.

In the end, I did not buy on price. The cheap units aren't cheap enough, and the lower efficiency doesn't pay off. Went with Trane. Bit more upfront, but way nicer unit and no more expensive when operating costs are added.

A better question would be, would the middle class actually vote for their interests over their hate of others?

I don't know. We just had a Bernie Bro on this forum create a thread about how much he hates old people and votes against their desires :p

They are all the same. Cheap crap designed to start failing after 5 years. Most of Carriers larger units have been coming out of Mexico for a few years now. We make a lot of money selling them then repairing them for the next 20 years. Also, typical home units cost between $1,300 and $2,000. Throw in $400 cost for labor and everything else is gravy.

I did the same a couple of years ago. Trane

The company said its HVAC residential headquarters and engineering positions will remain in Indianapolis.

Well you would still have to blame Americans for the 5 year failure rate.

Repeat after me Profit only matters, Profit only matters, not the country that makes it possible, not the American consumer that makes it possible, and certainly not that overpriced American worker that wants a clean environment, safe working conditions, fair labor practices, and a decent wage with benefits.

When a socialist like Bernie Sanders warns you what these free trade trade agreements and their results will be, I can understand why people don't listen, what does he know about business after all he is a tax and spend liberal socialist.

but when a capitalist billionaire warns America of the dire consequences of these free trade agreements and Americans don't listen,

No matter what blustery politicians tell you, there is only one thing that can change this trend. It's not tariffs, taxes or regulation, in fact it has nothing to do with government. The only thing that would make the corporation not send the jobs overseas is if consumers decide they won't buy the products anymore and instead decide to purchase products made in the US. That's it, there are no magic solutions.

I'll be putting in a new heating and cooling system over the next year, and Carrier will not be on my list of options.

Perhaps, if he can recreate a business climate that favors production in the U.S. AFAIK, he's the only one talking about it and is the only one saying that he can do it.

Or, we can have another president who hates the U.S. and is committed to making the nation pay for the sins committed in earlier times regardless of whether those sins were real or imagined. The nation can only be great again if the people want it and are willing to elect people who want it too.

I think that the biggest priority to many in the nation is getting free stuff. That woman who got all emotional about Obama paying for her gas and her mortgage got shortchanged and she's got the chance now to get what she feels she deserved. She's feelin' the Bern.

how is voting for Clinton going to stop this?

One can make the case that this is happening because of the Clintons because of NAFTA.

But discounting that argument.

The democratic party is all for mass illegal immigration, which effectively does the same thing: lower wages and take away jobs form legal citizens.

That is a product of the national debt going up by a similar ratio. Anything that is not counted in the official inflation statistics has risen by that much or more. Meanwhile they somehow get away with saying there is 1.5% inflation. And people believe it and vote for more of it.

It is the debt that is ultimately responsible for the loss of these jobs.

This is the result of globalization. Who started it? Our own businesses.

Can anyone stop it? No. The only way is innovate and create new jobs.

And invest in yourself.
