Lol, it gets dirty at the same pace as carpet, except carpet hides it. Now think how nasty the carpet has to be :)

It sucks. Costs as much or more than real hard woods, adds nothing to your home's value, and even hurts it in some cases, and isn't as tough to boot...regardless of what the manufacturers say. Heck, if it gets wet, it can warp...easily.

Put it in your trailer, but not your house.

I just put some in my trailer. ;)

I love the feel of carpet, but I think when it's time to replace what we have, I'm going to lay down tile. It is so much easier to clean...

hard wood floors with area rugs are nice. i like the maple in my bedroom, but don't want cold feet when i get out of bed in the morning, so i have a rug on the floor near my bed and one near the door to catch the stuff you drag in.

That is incorrect. Most Pergo/Laminate is much more scratch/scuff resistant than just about ANY true hardwood. It's a great option if you have pets. My $8 sq/ft brazillian cherry hardwood (one of the hardest out there) has been destroyed by my 80 pound dog. FWIW, the dog has her nails clipped weekly too.

Similar to most here, wood in the living room/hallway, carpet in the bedrooms and tile in the kitchen and bathrooms.

There was some really nasty carpet in the living room when we bought the house. Found some nice oak under all the carpet and it was much cheaper to refinish the wood than buy new carpet.

If i could choose.... i would put hardwood every where in our house...Bamboo and teak to be specific.
I hate wall to wall carpet for some reason.

And the dog would have destroyed a laminate floor, too. It's not any tougher, it will warp, and you can't resurface it like you can your hardwoods.
My grandma's little Peekapoo put scratches all over her Pergo.

Plus, you still have the value factor.

carpet because I have a dog. And it just seems mean to have hardwood floors with a dog(they run and run but get nowhere)

She must have some low end stuff then. I took some of the Pergo laminates (and a Mohawk one) over to the hardware section of Lowes and beat on them with a hammer and went at them with a screwdriver to see if I could scuff them. Couldn't do it.

Some hardwoods on the other hand I can scratch with just my thumbnail. Laminates will hold up better. Go into any flooring store and tell them that you have a big pet and honest one will steer you to the laminates.

hard surface FTW.
carpet FTL.

Keeping carpet clean just sucks.
For cold climates, that's why they make rugs ;)

She had actual Pergo, not the cheap knock-offs.

I'm not saying that laminates suck outright all across the board, just that for most people, real hardwoods are better.
For value of the home, hardwoods are better. For looks, hardwoods are better.

Note that I'm talking about REAL hardwoods....floors that are put in bare, then sanded and finished in place. Not those prefinished, beveled hardwoods.

I have hardwoods, and have 3 dogs, from 50-70 lbs..plus 5 cats and two kids....no scratches.

There are different grades of pergo branded flooring. I had wilsonart laminate put down because it's supposed to be better than the pergo brand. I was told to stay away from the pergo brand.

I would try Bruce hardwood floors

I have those in my house, and I like them.
You also don't need any professional installers or specialized tools (like a flooring chisel)

I'd suggest hardwood with a runner for you bedroom
Carpet can hold dust and is a pain to clean- thus increasing allergies
Allergies hit me hard, so it'd be a must for me

I had to fight my wife pretty hard to get on site finish hardwood put in before we move in. She wanted to do carpet first. I found a guy to do short maple natural on site finish for C$7/SqFt.

Now I just vac it quickly and it is clean. If it weren't for all the cables I got, I would roomba it :)
