Cunard has trans oceanic cruises that go from California to Hawaii and Hawaii to Australia.

But not the Gulf of Mexico to Hawaii. There are cruises from Florida to California through the Panama Canal but none from Florida to Hawaii. The guy I responded to was wondering if his parents were on this cruise but he thought they were on a Hawaiian cruise. Based on that information alone I was pretty sure they were not on that ship and this was my reasoning.

Turns out he didn't really know where his parents were but they were not on that ship thankfully. :p

So Wreckem, which cruise line do you work for?

I don't deny that cruise lines spend a lot of money trying to keep customers happy but, why do they always seem to spend it so poorly? They should be spending it on inspections, training, infrastructure and be very visible when disasters do occur instead of making a few canned speeches.

There are functioning toilets. Just not enough for 3000+ guests and the 1500+ crew.

They function just fine. All the shit from the upper decks ends up coming out all the drains in the cabins on the lower decks. As long as you're in first class you're good!

Here's the compensation they received, what do you guys think? Fair? Not enough?

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1787179

Its better than what cruise lines typically start out at. I'd say its fair if it was all cash and not two future cruise vouchers. I'd also like to see every get the same amount of money for expenses. Some people can rack up thousands in on board spending while others do their damnedest to have zero. Comping onboard expenses means nothing to a lot of cruisers, since they dont have onboard expenses.

Carnival's compensation is fair. Nuff said on this.

BTW, CNN is trying to pump up the misery factor by profiling some family members who aren't even on board who got phone calls from family passengers. They found some soccer moms to talk about how their kids are suffering from the shit smell......My God! The humanity!....The moms were inconsolable over this.

People nowadays are sofffft. Put some of these fuckers on a 16th century galley ship and have them traverse the Atlantic in order to get some perspective of the shit our forefathers had to put up with.

What the hell? Anything for ratings I suppose.

You're right. People these days have it too easy. Any child who is booked on a cruise ship should be cleaning shit and scrubbing decks. Fucking freeloaders.

They've all got the word compensation bouncing around their fat heads; hence the hyperbolic rhetoric. I have no doubt they can already smell and taste the money.

I wonder if they could just take another cruise ship that is empty and have it dock against that ship and start transferring people to it. Then they could actually go on with the rest of the cruise while some crew stay behind to work on getting that ship back in order.

I don't know if there are standard/safe ways to do this but I'm sure in less than a day they could come up with something and have it certified safe by people of authority (engineers and insurance I guess?)

I don't know if anyone asked this but why are the toilets overflowing/sewage leaking on the ship? Don't they just dump it into the ocean?

I doubt they can just dump all that waste into the sea, that would be a pretty big environmental issue. They probably filter it first. You'd think it would be gravity fed to a tank that sits at the bottom of the ship though. Then it would only need to pump out once it's been cleaned.

No running water or power. Heard folks don't want to do their business in their cabins so they're going in the hallways. I guess they don't remember what a poop deck is for.

yeah i've heard that this is actually quite bad..

they are in hallways, in the pitch black, like NO LIGHT WHATSOEVER, and people are acting like animals and shitting in the hallways right next to themselves..

it's because it is pitch black in there, the poop is not even in the toilets, it's in the hallways, rugs/carpets are urine soaked..

Because no cruise line would just have a cruise ship ready 'just in case'. It's just like airlines, you don't really keep much in terms of spares. If you have a spare cruise ship, why is it wasting money sitting in port instead of (a) getting ready for another cruise or (b) going on another cruise?

Not to mention, you are also talking about 5000 people and their belongings. It's not so simple just to move them off a ship. It's much faster to just tow it back to shore.

The prick kid focused on the burgers so I reiterated him. The toilets quit working, that sucks but for 2 days? It sucks, I'm not saying it doesn't suck, but at the end of the day you live. I guess it rubbed me wrong that humans have become so pvssified.

It wasn't 2 days, it has been 4 days now. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

Actually they can a lot of waste into the ocean without treatment.

nah. The sea is a huge place, and waste is processed quickly and effectively. And in the gulf, no less, you've already got a strange ecosystem due to perpetually leaking fossil fuels and petroleum seeping up from the sea floor. This has lead to a microbial ecosystem that thrives on organic material that is usually toxic in most places. Not sure if that makes the gulf a "better" environment for processing human waste, but it really isn't anything to be concerned about. In any ocean ecosystem, Fish have an extremely high ammonia content in their urine, as it diffuses instantly upon expulsion. The human complement of ammonia from waste, which is extremely low, would pale in comparison

This is why the BP spill ended up being a non-factor to the sea ecosystem, (the marshes and shoreline along the gulf being a different issue, altogether).

Yeah, I guess if you complete ignore the whole " your still alive. Your not hurt. Calm down and get over it a bit." part your point would make sense.

If you think any of that is the same as being thankful I don't think you actually understand what 'thankful' means

There are functioning toilets. Just not enough for 3000+ guests and the 1500+ crew.

I am curious to know how many actual toilets are working out of the normal compliment. They keep mentioning 'functioning restrooms' but on the cruise ship I was on restrooms varied greatly in the number of people they could accommodate

Thanks! I don't know why I didn't think to look at that site.

Anyway for some perspective this is what one poster relayed form his wife onboard:

1. They did have to wait in line for hours for food.

2. They have been living on bread and fruit

3. They were sleeping on the deck under sheets made into tents. She called it "Shanty Town"

4. The crew has been working non stop to make them comfortable!

5. They had use bags for restrooms, but they also found random toilets that were working because there was a long line! They had to wait for that restroom because after every person the crew had to poor water to get it to flush.

6. There is sewage on the floors. The carpets were squishy.

7. She said the worst part of it was worrying about the babies. Last night Carnival made an announcement looking for anyone with formula!

Seems like food is not much of an issue although the sewage issue is larger than the original impression I got. I'd be interested to know how many floors its an issue on

Also - it seems new cruise regulations in 2010 mandate backup generators to prevent this kind of issue. Older ships - like this one - are exempt (which is not surprising)
