Carlos Mencia stealing joke from Bill Cosby

A lot of it has to do with making something your own. Take Ron White. His jokes are usually very simple- it's his delivery and presence that makes him different, not his writing. This is the big issue with the Cosby joke- Mencia just cut & pasted, and that from one of the best-known skits from one of the best-known, most distinctive comedians around. It goes beyond stealing- it's an insult to the public's intelligence.

This is also the same thing that got Vanilla Ice into trouble. Few people really cared that he sampled an old David Bowie song, but then he tried to claim it was his creation. The already ridiculous "everyone does it, stealing is the basis of rap music, black people are too poor to write their own music, recompense us for slavery" sampling defense just doesn't work for someone named Robert Van Winkle.

granted... jokes about racial stereo types can be very funny... but all his jokes are like... the lowest common denominator. it's not even really comedy... it's like... pointing and laughing?

either way... it's overly simplistic, played out, and all-in-all just plain annoying.

The sad thing about the Bill Cosby sketch in the OP is that he was talking about his son... who was murdered on the side of a road 14 years after the performance.

And Carlos still stole it. Dude...

Yup. It was like they shipped Chapelle's job overseas to Mexico, and the quality of the product declined exponentially. Mencia is awful.

I despise illegal immigration, and people being unwilling to learn the language of a country they move to pisses me off, but let's don't go anywhere near implying Hispanics in general are thieves. Most of the ones I've known (and I've known a lot) have earned their jobs significantly more than most of the whiny ignorant self-entitled white people around them.

Although I sort of stated otherwise in another thread for the sake of argument, I am hispanic, and know how to take a JOKE.

The reason it was funny was because it called up negative stereotypes of Mexican immigrants in such an outlandish and taboo fashion.

It's not the Mexican's that are funny. It's the fact that such a joke aligns itself with a plausible reality, which is enough for a giggle.

It's kind of like the difference in some writing styles - some people say "This character felt sad," while others would show it through emotion, his feelings, etc. to get that same point across, but with more meaning in the latter. Show, don't tell.

What makes that Cosby clip even more absurd is the cadence in which he tells the joke. Yah he uses different words but the whole point of the joke and the cadence of the delivery are exactly the same.
