The spitting part was for directly after the procedure, e.g. the first day. It interferes with the blood clotting, so you end up bleeding more which is counter-productive.

I didn't rinse with salt water until the next day I think.

:Q WTF, that's nasty! I was knocked out when I had the 4 out, I think 2 were impacted.

Soft foods/drinks are required, nothing hot, spicy, crunchy or with sharp edges etc. No mouthwash for the first 48 hours at least IIRC, and I had to rinse with warm salty water twice a day to ward off infection and/or dry sockets(?).

They are giving him amoxicillin and hydrocodone. But they are sewing the wounds shut. I'm sure she (the doctor) will recommend certain things.
But yes, I hope they knock him out too cause it's gonna suck.

That's crap.

When I got my four cut out my dr. gave me oxycontin. It was a godsend.

I can relate though. I just had my tonsils ripped out monday. Not fun.

So what do you do, let stuff drool out or swallow? If swallow, why is that any different than just spitting it out? Sorry I am just trying to understand this thoroughly because I will be going through this soon

Anyone have this done? What am I in for?

Not really all that painful until the second or third day, if he's like me. And even then, pretty minor compared to the pain of most other surgeries, or even a tonsillectomy. The main thing is to make sure he drinks enough and eats enough otherwise those pain killers can do a number on the body.

What causes you to not get knocked out for this procedure? Can you just tell your dentist that local isnt good enough for you and you are willing to pay extra for the knock out meds?

When I had mine, it was a general anesthetic because two of them were not yet impacted and thus general was recommended. I am surprised that they would use local if they have to splinter the teeth.

I let it drool out, not very glamorous but hey :p

I assume the spitting is bad because it's causes an increase in pressure in your mouth, pulling any fluid forward. If a clot is forming, it could be affected.

I had my wisdom teeth taken out a few years ago. I was under heavy drugs and I just wanted to be left alone. I don't remember ti being painful though.

I had all 4 of mine and 2 cracked teeth removed all at the same 2. 2 of my wisdom teeth were impacted, he tried to put me out but couldnt, shot me up with all he had and was awake fo rthe whole thing, even drove home after it was done. Whale he was taking my teeth out they were cracking and coming apart and he was saying how sorry and how sorry he couldnt give me any more stuff to knock me out, but I had no reaction to the meds so I was a wake, and not numbed up for it.

I was not given any pain meds afterwards as well, just delt with it, it sucked for a week, but I just cut everything up in super tiny bites and tried to chew, hurt like hell when tthe food moved and hit the 6 spots I used to have teeth, but I got over it. Dont think it was all that bad really and had much worse pain, the dentist should say what he can and cannot eat and for how long, just give him that, in about a week should be eating ice cubes, razor blades, glass, and needles again :)

let me tell you something about "just getting local." no matter how many people say "get put out! get put to sleep!", when you get local and aren't completely under, the surgeon (dentist) won't be as rough with you because he/she knows you are aware of what is going on. so if they are more gentle you aren't going to swell up as much. this is a fact.

also, some people come out of general anesthesia feeling quite sick and nauseous for quite some time. he won't have to deal with that.

lastly, he needs to realize A LOT of people have went through this (me included - 4 wisdom teeth out at one appt, and with just local anesthesia), and he will survive.

lots of those cotton pieces to soak up the blood, after that, milkshakes and soup, (cool w noodles).

the freshly made shakes (strawberry) made with milk/strawberries and breyers vanilla is really good.

From someone who had this exact thing done just over a year ago I feel like I have something to offer here.

First of all when they get out of surgery they will be very messed up, staggering and pretty goofy to be perfectly honest, may want to bring a towel since i passed out in the car and drooled blood on myself.

Second your face is VERY numb and feels cold for at least a day (potential for perma-paralysis of the face due to the facial nerves being very close to the wisdom teeth)

The reason you dont spit is because you create pressure inside your mouth and can dislodge the clot pretty easily, you just want to swish and turn your head down and let the water run out.

The best thing to eat IMO is tomato soup, then a few days later change it up a bit with chicken noodle, my reasoning for this is because the noodles tend to get stuck in the sockets. You will need to eat 6-8 times a day because there isnt much nutrition in it, but hey its the easiest thing to eat.

This is just a quickie so if you want more info feel free to pm me with questions

I'm not sure how invasive his was, but mine were completely under the gums so they had to be cut out under general anaesthesia. One piece of advice I can give... make sure you keep pressure on the gauze pads for as long as you can stand. If you can stop the bleeding and get some good clots forming, it will go a long way to making him as comfortable as possible. Nothing is fouler than vomiting clotted blood, trust me. Also, ask the doctor if you can supplement the pain meds with a little ibuprofen. That was a godsend when I had abdominal surgery.

Where did you have yours done, El Salvadore?

Nope, welfare insurance, 3 years ago in Indiana. You know the health care everyone bitches about you get that supposed to be the best care that I didnt have to pay for by doctors and dentists that care for me as a human being not a piece of white trash garbage, even though I was NOT on the system by choice.

Tell you when your on the welfare system some of the doctors wont even look at you in the eye, and its "why you here, oh your fine go home take a aspirin, Oh I dont know why your head hurts, your back hurts, youre in the fetal position complaining of massive pain, here takes this sh1t and give it a try, oh that didnt work, try this. That didnt work either, try this. HUH that neither huh, maybe you should see a specialist, we will get started on the paper work, should take about 3 months to get it approved, unless you die by that time." ;)

I had my wisdom teeth on the left and right side removed seperately. For the left, I had a local and was awake. While the bottom one was being pulled out, it broke into pieces and cut my gums. They decided not to do the right that day and to wait 2 weeks. I went home and decided to play on the computer to take my mind off of the pain (the pain killers sucked/had little effect) but unfortunately for me, that was the day that the North East had the big black out. So not only did I have to change the guaze and crappy pain meds, I didn't have any computer or tv to keep me occupied... only a cd player. Yeah, that wasn't a fun few days. When I went in for my right, I had them knock me out. Apparently everything went well because I was only on the (crappy) pain meds for only a few hours. My right side hurt very little and was feeling about the same as my right side about after a week.

So, get good medication and have lots of things to do that your SO really enjoys doing to keep them busy.

I got all 4 of my W-teeth out last april, and i hardly noticed it. They knocked me out with NOX? maybe, and shot me full of novacane for the operation. The worst part of it for me was that afternoon with the novacain wearing off. I mostly had yogurt, and i stuck a pizza in the blender with a little tomato sauce when i got fed up with crappy yogurt and juice. Also an annoying part is the huge ass freaking holes that you gotta keep food out of while they heal up. I was always pickin at them with like a toothpick or a fork or something, just be really gentle so you dont break anything open again and start bleeding.

Don't use a toothpick.

You should rinse the holes regularly. My doc gave me a syringe. At first I had no idea why when I got home. Fortunately my friend was there when I woke up because I did not remember a single word they told me when I woke up. It's kind of stupid of them to start telling me important things a minute after I wake up from general anesthesia.

No one has mentioned it, I'm sure the doctor will, but don't let him use any straws for a while.
