Ok, make a long story short, a friend of mine is entitled to "the car of his choice within reason" come november next year. (btw, "reason" means under $50K to the best of our konwledge)

His older brother got the same deal, and he got an S4. So now my friend has to get a really great car, that is NOT rear wheel drive, under 50K, and not an S4 (can't get the same thing your brother got!).

ideas? we were thinking about the subaru, but the reviews on it have been really harsh.

Yeah....the Audi S6 is scheduled to be coming over to the states this year. I believe that the Audi All Road Quattro is listed under 50K.
Some other suggestions: Lincoln LS or Honda S2000

I'd go with the Honda S2000 but if hes large then that car might be too small for him. Hm... can he import a Honda Accord Type R? :D

I think the S6 is only coming over in the "Avant" (Station wagon) style, and I highly doubt that it will be available for under 50k.

The S4 Avants are going for about 43k, I doubt that the S6 will "only" be $7,000 more.

Also, the Lincoln LS is nice, but it is RWD, I also believe the S2000 is RWD as well.

Maybe a tricked out Prelude? It's no S4 though :( Other options would be the Special Edition Anniversery model of the Nissan Maxima.

I'll get flamed for this but..

Integra Type-R, go to Canada to get a Championship White one that is still left-hand drive, then use the remaining $20-25k to...do lots of cool stuff

Under 50k and no RWD!? That's stupid as hell! 50k is plenty, but no RWD sucks. 25k plus is nothing but RWD country, and sometimes AWD.

You really should consider the M3, though it's an RWD. Have them test drive it and they might think different about RWD. :)

<< in the "Avant" Station wagon style >>

Avant means it is a station wagon not a style of station wagon. They just dislike the term station wagon in Europe.

Edited for clarification...happy now yakko? :p

Also, the S2000 is going for $4,000 ABOVE MSRP. Sorry, homey don't play dat. That is 1/8 the price of the car just in a demand markup.

Here's a few good choices:
Perfect mix of sport, luxery and quality:
Volkswagen Passat or Jetta/Golf GTi VR6 (190HP) and the passat can be 4 wheel drive

Sport Cars:
Honda Prelude (195 or 200HP) with the Traction Control System
Acura Integra Type R (195hp) --> better car than prelude
Honda S2000
Audi TT
Celica GTS V6
Toyota MR2 Spyder (mid engine ... only 138hp tho)

Sport Luxery:
Honda Accord Coupe V6
Toyata Solara (Camry) V6

Maybe he should get a truck ?!
Toyota Tundra
Ford F150-250-350

And for 50K !!! You can get a REALLY KICK ASS MUSCLE CAR !!! 1968-1969 Firebird/Camaro SS!
or a Dodge Challenger/Charger/Duster
or maybe Chevy Nova SS

If you live in the south, I would really get a muscle car ! You don't see much on the road, and a lot better looking than any of the "new" cars ! At least when you open the hood, you can SEE the engine ! Or enven the spark plugs ! Also a lot cheaper to fix ... just gas might be a drag tho

My 2 cents

The only problem with that list is that none of them on there will even come remotely close to the performance and sheer "coolness" of the S4. The car just drips with class. The only cars that really come close are the Passat and the TT. The passat is a slug, and the TT is impractical.

Sucks that he can't go for a nice Bimmer :(

[Edit] I know that those muscle cars will tear up some asphalt, but they most definitely disqualify because of their RWD nature.

BMW X5 3.0 Base - $39,995
Activity Package - $850
Climate Package - $850
Premium Package - $2,950
Auto Transmission - $1,275
Naviagtion - $1,990
Xenon Headlights - $500

Total $47,960

Try to get a few more bucks for the Sport Package. They uograde the rims to 18"ers and give it the air suspension from the 4.4. Unlike the 4.4, there is room to haggle on the 3.0 models.

Hey Windogg, is the X5 a full time AWD system? Or, is it RWD w/ 4x4 on the fly?

Both X5s are AWD with a 68R/32F split. All diffs are open but the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system is excellent. I tried to spin my 4.4 on aparking lot and the system will not allow it. It turned it off and the truck went tailhappy ASAP. The 3.0 gets excellent power with 0 - 60 times around 7.5 - 8 seconds. The X5s were recently named the safest SUV in recent crash test. I don't know if the 3.0 gets the 5 speed Steptronics but the automatic is one of the smartest I've ever driven in sport mode it will hold to 200RPM below redline. In rapid deceleration, it was assist by downshifting early and provide engine braking. It work in conjunction with the DSC to avoid dangerous situations such as downshifting in a icy turn which my cause loss of control.

That's why it's so incomprehensible to want a 50K car that's as fast as the S4, but not the S4 and is not RWD.

Some people....for 50K, i'd pick up either a Corvette Z06 or BMW M3. Well...actually I'd take that Carrera 4:D
