Everyone who keeps bringing up the IS300, kindly keep in mind that that is a RWD car, which is apparently out for this guy (though frankly the whole thing sounds more than a little fishy). It has to be, since it is a carbon copy of the 3-series!
The best-performing AWD car available in the United States less than $50K is the soon-to-be available Impreza WRX, whose power-to-weight ratio is even better than the S4. Otherwise the S4 (which is obviously much nicer in most other regards) seems like the no-brainer choice.
The Prelude and ITR are probably the best-handling FWD cars, but the upcoming Volvo S60 T5 sounds awfully sweet if one can handle the torque steer of 247 bhp through the front wheels. I would take the S4 over any of these FWD cars in a heartbeat, though.
