I park far away if possible. It's really not worth the aggravation, and totally worth an extra 15 seconds of walking.

Today at Buy Buy Baby even though I parked near the back some douche left a shopping cart touching right up against my front bumper. Good thing it wasn't the painted part but the black part. Can't trust any mofo out there. I already had to get some random scrapes buffed out just a few months into my ownership. I hate people.

I miss the days before airbags. Time was when you could knock the crap out of cars in the lot with no problems. Now, you tap another car and the next thing you know your kid's head is being smashed through the passenger side window. Some progress.

Methinks the OP is over-reacting. To get one's car significantly damaged is one thing, but over the course of the lifetime of owning a vehicle I think it is reasonably fair to expect that your vehicle will get a few scratches from inadvertent accidents from other doors, shopping carts, or whatever.

To go through your life thinking that your car should never, ever be scratched is a bit preposterous.

i have this nasty habig of parking right next to people who do this

I have no problem with it as long as you don't purposely touch my vehicle. Parking far away allows me to avoid having a lot of pedestrians pass by on their way to the store. The more front and center you park, the more times you are at risk with jacket zippers, purses, shopping carts, and other carried items.

Oh another reason I HAVE to do it is because I have 2 baby carriers which must go in through the rear side doors... need the open space.

And btw, you are a dick, but obviously you knew that. :D

My philosophy is that if I'm all super worried about some scratch on my car I'm probably driving a car I cannot afford. I buy cars nice enough not to be ashamed of but cheap enough to not care about scratches or dings.

What makes me mad is not the scratch, but the fact that someone has the nerve to damage someone's property and not take responsibility for it.

bwahahahahahaha

your kidding right?

in this day and age of no responsibilty, with the govt propergating that even deeper in our culture w/bailouts?

i saw a big caddy make a 3point uturn on a tight street. nailed the doors of a parked car with this front bumper. when he went into reverse to complete his illegal uturn, nailed another car with this rear bumper. he just went on his way.

left some dents and chipped paint behind him.

Creative parking. Find an end space, a space next to a handycrapper spot or a space out in the middle of nowhere. It's healthier to walk more anyhow.

But don't take up two spaces or someone will (rightfully) vandalize your car.

Door dings are a fact of life and nothing new. Rather than bitch about them, I learned to expect them and try to never park where it is possible for someone to ding me.

My 10 year old Passat has not a single door ding.

There is a certain freedom in driving a beater.

Kinda like having nothing to lose.

Long story short:
Guy in a Mercedes convertible gave me less than 6 inches of space between my closed driver side door and his door. I climbed through my passenger side, moved my car, and proceeded to dump several bottles of dip-spit all over his car.

No, that's actually a short story. Seriously, how much more to this could there be?

You don't have much luck with girls, do you?

Luck has nothing to do with me getting girls. Nothing at all...

cold hard cash FTMFW!

I got to the carpool lot after work one day to notice that a white vehicle had opened their doorn into my Mustang. I looked over to see the car was still there....with a little bit of my paint on it. I thought Hmmmm.... that person now has a size 11 foot print in their Lincoln Navigator door.

No. I was working for TWC in Manhattan at the time. If one of the "real" foremen (as opposed to my "direct" foreman) would have been contacted, I would have been told to stay, fill police report, fill company report and have to take a drug test...

No, because if someone has mental problems ofver a scratch, they:
1) spent more money on their car than they should have (ie. they can't afford the car)
2) have to much spare times on their hands
3) don't realize that this is inevitable and decide to bitch and moan like they are in the right at the ATOT forums.

pretty much, its a fucking SCRATCH... who gives a shit... all you are doing by giving your info is placing yourself in a position to be fucked over by some nut case. That is assuming they don't get violent.

and yes, if you leave a note apologizing for a scratch they will sue you for damage you did NOT cause.

The mentions of the government propagating a notion of not taking responsibility is also true...

were you not the one who started that thread about parents owing you a car?

I think anyone who cares about their possessions would care about a ding on their paint. It doesn't matter if it's a $15k car or $150k car... if they worked hard for it and are proud of it, they have every reason to be upset at someone's indiscretion. My 13-year old car got a nice long scratch by some fucknut about 10 years into my ownership... it still hurt bad.

Personally I'd leave a note with just my email address (probably make one up on the spot and go register it when I get home) that way I still have to ID myself further once he contacts me. It's not like it's thousands of dollars of damage, so I'd just offer to pay for it if the guy seems nice about it. If he's a total asshole then I'd just ignore the rest of his emails. Also I'd never go through the insurance or get the police involved as it would just cause too much red tape not to mention cost WAY more.

If someone did that to my car I would at least appreciate that the person took the time to take responsibility. Whether or not I'd make him pay for it would really depend on the circumstance. I have an older car that's like a tank so I doubt a car door would do much damage. :p Now if it was a brand new car I'd probably get him to pay and leave it at that.

Though while sometimes it can pay to be nice sometimes it can also bite you in the ass so it's really hard to tell what is the best way to handle it (either you damaging or someone damaging your car)

The guy parked his brand new Porsche Boxster at the far end of the lot, cockeyed across two spaces. The car was obviously his baby, and he didn't want anybody coming within fifteen feet of it, much less actually having the gall to approach it with another car.

So, of course, I left him a note. "Sorry about the ding," it said.

Y'know, just to screw with him.

Well, I look at cars as a machine to get you from a to b. It's not a piece of artwork or something to be put in a display case (unless it's a rare car, but we're talking about everyday drivers), so I treat it as such and a small ding, even on my 18k car I've got now is no big deal to me - people who wash and wax their Nissan Maximas (or whatever normal car they've got) I just do not get, I mean come on, it's just a car, my time is more valuable to spend everyday worrying about some hunk of metal.
