Car got broken into. Backpack was stolen.

Not only are you a loser but also a moron. Sell the friggin car since you can't even maintain it yourself. Dumbass leaves his backpack in plain view in the city and doesn't think someone might break into his car to steal it.

I maintain the car perfectly? I don't know what you're smoking. It runs perfect. It looks great. I just got the window broken and don't want to pay for the replacement. Big whoop... So my parents are paying for it. Yay for that.

Giving thieves a reason to break into your car = irresponsible.

Thieves have any reason to break into a car because they're a thief... They could break into any car that isn't showing anything in there and take whatever they want... or just try to steal the car itself.

GTA =/= smash and grab

entirely different set of requirements.

It's an or option. It doesn't mean the same thing as and.

No dude. A smash and grab requires a rock. GTA requires luck (you leaving your keys in the ignition) or preparation (ability to hotwire a car, bringing along a tow truck)

the odds of someone doing a smash and grab on a car with NOTHING visible is incredibly low.

srsly, learn how to steal.

Yet in your case, they broke into your car to steal your backpack.

I don't know why there are not more cameras around this area with all the apartments nearby...

I dont know why people leave stuff in their car.

You presented someone with a crime of opportunity. They saw your bag, broke the window and stole your bag.

In most cases if there is no opportunity, there is no crime. Do not give them a reason to commit the crime.

this.

i had an old 76 impala with a 49 dollar stereo. i left the face in it for a week in my parking lot, so someone busted the back wing window and stole the deck. the replacement window at salvage was 130 bucks, no new option. i made a cardboard filler and duct taped it in. i never even locked my doors after that. 3 more years of driving that car with the cardboard window and never had an issue. i replaced the stereo but made sure to take the face off when i got out after that.

dont make it look like you have something to steal and there is much less chance your car will get broken into.

Are people really saying he should have expected people would break in to a car because they saw a fucking backpack? People break in to steal stereos, GPS & shit like that. There's not a black market for backpacks or text books. I worked at a store that had thieves coming in every day to try to sell off shit they stole. I was asked if I wanted to buy many things over the years I work there. A backpack or books were never brought up though. Even if they broke in thinking there might be a wallet in the backpack, they would have left it there after going thru it and finding nothing of the sorts.

I chalk this up to TridenT's bad luck and nothing else.

Around colleges, backpacks usually have laptops.

Not to mention quick sale of books via campus bookstore....

You would suck as a thief. Why would a thief spend the time to rummage thru his backpack while still at the scene of the crime? Sorry, I'm going to smash the window, grab the backpack and take it some place safe where I can hopefully find a laptop, smartphone, ipod, etc...

I had someone throw a big rock through my drivers side window witch also damaged the passenger door ( that's how hard it was thrown ) and steal my cobra radar detector. They ran off so fast they didn't get the power connector . Thing was my doors were unlocked that night ...

When I was in school it was entirely possible that my backpack had a laptop, camera, phone and mp3 player in it at any given point in time. College students carry around expensive stuff in their backpacks so they're great targets for smash and grab.
