Anyway, my stance is lets get nuclear plants cranked out. It's imbecilic that we don't have more of them. Heck I live within 10 miles of one and the only time it causes me ANY problem is if I bike past it everything becomes green to look at for the next 2-3 hours (not a big deal, really).

j/k about the green.

I think those were earlier windfarms that ran into maintenance problems and the turbines/generators were not of sufficient scale the be cost effective. Wind is a decent solution but it can't realistically come anywhere close to replacing our legacy generators, though it should be pursued where possible.

It is expected that several utilities will be submitting license applications the NRC within the next few months for new nuclear reactors (the first such applications in 30 odd years). Even if everything goes just right none of these will go online prior to 2015.

I am generally liberal, pro energy diversifacation (particularly with smaller scale and more broadly distributed renewables) and very much agree. Kennedy and the NIMBYs fighting the cape wind project should be ashamed of themselves.

too stupid or your sarcasm meter is lost in the mail?

Neither, It was there for those with the brain power to enjoy a comedic style known as humoring an idiot. Links, I know you'll want links. There's a story about it here.

It sure would be nice if these NIMBYs would shut their yappers so this beneficial project could get off the ground. There is absolutely no reason it should take 6 years for it to start. Kennedy and the other NIMBYs should be ashamed of themselves. "progressive".... my ass...

They are progressively trying to relocate it into a poorer neighborhood. Most likely a democrat stronghold and call it a gift to the people.

For some of us it WILL be a gift. I never figured I'd ever win the lottery since I don't buy tickets, but is close enough for me. :)

They've been doing studies on wind speed out where my land is for 3 or 4 years now. I just had a call from them and they want an easement to go ahead with a proposed wind farm and want to put 5 of the latest, biggest windmills on my land (250 meter I believe?) and he was talking a guaranteed $5000 per windmill and according to their studies they are thinking closer to $8000/windmill.

we just had a similar decision in texas the other day, except it went the other way. the NIMBYs and migratory bird people can't fight the turbines themselves, so they attack the transmission line. here the line would pass over kenedy ranch (no relation), and it was king ranch that was challenging it. the public utilities commission determined that king ranch and the bird people had no standing to challenge because the line wouldn't pass within 500 feet of their property.

by the end of the year we expect to have passed denmark in terms of total wind power generation. if the US were broken up by state, texas would be the 4th largest wind power generator in the world. and we'll soon have massive off shore generation.

'Big Oil' Texas will soon be 'Big Wind'

oh the irony

Am I the only person who would LIKE a view that included a reasonable number of turbines? Maybe I'm just too much of a techie, but I like the idea of being able to see my energy being produced by these relatively elegant structures. It's not like they are an eyesore like a coal fired power plant, they have a very "living in harmony with nature" look to them that I think adds, rather than detracts, from natural views. I always liked seeing the turbines when I would drive through Iowa from the same reason, it was a peaceful natural environment with some human structures that worked WITH the environment instead of trying to beat it into shape.

I think you are absolutely right. I find them elegant and also a kind of harmony-with-nature thing. You see a big windfarm and that's electricty for free (initial investment notwithstanding, which can be substantial, and I still think we need more nuke plants rather than these other approaches).

That somebody could whine about a windmill but also say we need to protect the environment is just crazy.

There is. It's called KENNEDY.

Yeah, he's not just a liberal NIMBY, but also a worthless blowhard. ....but he's not really the specific topic here(although he's involved).

I think it is safe to say he's more than involved...What a Kennedy wants, a Kennedy gets. They've (Ted in particular) been vocally opposed to this project from day one. Those expensive views aren't going to be ruined by wind turbines!

Gee, now why do I get the feeling this is less about wind energy than in figuring out some new way to stick it to the "other guys"? Have you two found your environmentalist hearts, or is this just a convenient source for more political bullshit?

Whining for the sake of whining seems to be a popular part of modern politics. Sometimes I think if all our disagreements and problems were solved tomorrow, we'd invent new ones just so we could keep fighting.

Sometimes? :) I think this all the time. People need conflict, they need sources of fear, they have to define themselves with something to hate. I am not in this group.

I'm the last person you'd call a green thumb or an environmentalist. That doesn't mean I don't care about it, I'm just not a nutcase

There really isn't any political angle here. It has more to do with the lifestyles of the elite and a story about power and privilege - Ted certainly isn't alone in this category, but this highlights it to a T.

Uh... I am about the most tree-hugging Conservative you'll ever know - I'm just not an Enviro-Nut.
The swimmer thing was brought up and I made a quick comment on it so untwist your panties already. sheesh.
