Can't have my PS3 hooked up to the internet at the same time as my PC

Background:

College Dorm
Linksys Router WRT54G (w/ wireless)
PC is hooked up to router, and Playstation 3 is hooked up to router via ethernet as well (I was using WiFi before but no longer).

I've been having trouble connecting my PS3 online, it's strange. I fail to sign in, and then when I go back to my PC the internet stops working, so I unplug the router for a few minutes, replug, then everything's okay (except my PS3's online).

When I try signing in again and failing to do so, I go to Network Settings on the PS3, set it up again, and then when it does a connection test the IP Address acquiring fails and then back on my PC it suddenly doesn't have an IP Address (0.00.00 etc.). Turning off my PS3 and restarting my computer got the internet back up.

So what's the deal? Why can't I go online with my PS3? My Wii connects to the internet fine.

If this needs to be known, I am port forwarding DC++ 35566 to 35566 and Hamachi 12975 to 32976. PS3 was able to go online before with those forwarded ports before, however. I dunno what's up now.

It sounds like the router is handing out the same address twice almost and that shouldn't happen. I'm guessing that your PC is also setup to be configured via DHCP. Have you tried updating to the latest firmware for the router?

I assigned a different IP manually and everything works now. Prior to that I updated my firmware.

under the settings for DHCP, there should be something called:
Maximum Number of DHCP Users:
I had mine set to 3 (I have my main PC, my bro's PC, and my PS3) and was having a issue with the ps3 not getting an IP, so I changed that value to 5 and now no problems.

I may be a bit late to reply here, but the problem isn't the router at all. It's Sony's crap software that they continue to refuse to take responsibility for. They're first response is always "Something is wrong with your router". I have answered numerous questions from the Linksys forums about wireless connectivity, etc. And magically, even though Sony blamed the router, once you got the Software Updates the problem was fixed.

Now this brings us to the issue of disconnecting internet when the PS3 is powered up. It would be hard for Sony to blame the routers on this one as I've seen it reproduced on Linksys, Cisco, and even my Belkin router at home, but I was able to track down the problem.

The problem is with Sony's Media Server implementation. Now I'm not 100% sure why it breaks the internet, it just does. I discovered this first by disabling UPnP alltogether, but this isn't always the best choice as it stops games from auto-configuring ports on your router and may make it hard to play online.

Then, I found that it was actually a specific feature that uses the UPnP to communicate over the network....introducing Sony's magical Media Server.

So, to fix your problem.

  1. 1. Start up your PS3....
    2. go to Settings --> Network Settings
    3. Disable "Media Server Connection"
    4. Turn off your PS3
    5. Reboot your PC's
And voila...you're done. There should be no more problems running your PS3 and PC's at the same time as nothing will lose internet anymore.

Here's the reason. Your computer and PS3 is getting assigned the same IP address by your router. Simple solution would be turning on your PS3 1st, then turn on your computer. Or you can go into router and setup static IP for the 2 machines.
